Baking bread in a Dutch oven has become one of my favorite kitchen adventures, and it’s easier than you might think. The key to achieving that perfect crust and fluffy interior is using the Dutch oven’s sealed environment, which traps steam and mimics professional bread ovens. I like to start by preparing a basic dough with just flour, water, yeast, and salt — keeping it simple lets the natural flavor of the bread shine through. After letting the dough rise, I heat my Dutch oven in the oven to get it nice and hot before placing the dough inside. This helps create the beautiful crust we all love. One tip I’ve learned is to score the dough with a sharp knife right before baking to allow it to expand properly and develop more texture. The result is always impressive — a golden-brown loaf with a crunchy exterior and soft, chewy center. Experimenting with different flours or adding herbs can also enhance the flavor. Whether you’re a novice or seasoned baker, baking dutch oven bread is a rewarding experience, and each loaf you make feels like a small culinary victory. Overproofed Sourdough loaf or Perfection?

Everyone has their own goal when baking sourdough bread. Some like their crumb to be very hole-y and open, others prefer a slightly denser loaf, but I find that more and more people like a fluffy, closed crumb. One where the butter and jam won’t seep through the holes yet it’s very soft and fluffy.
