Moments from my first semester in college

2024/2/2 Edited to

... Read moreIt's wild to think I'm already two weeks into my second semester! My first semester flew by, and looking back, getting involved was truly the game-changer for me. When I first stepped onto campus, I felt a mix of excitement and nerves. How do you even begin to find your place in such a big new environment? If you're a freshman wondering the same thing, trust me, you're not alone! One of the best pieces of advice I got was to explore clubs and organizations. I'm a huge art lover, so finding a group that resonated with that was key. I even managed to get some of my art hung up in the school library – something I never thought possible! It wasn't just about indulging in my hobby; it was about meeting people with shared interests and feeling like I was contributing. I also found myself drawn to a school rally for a cause I cared about. It was powerful to see so many students come together, and I felt a real sense of belonging participating in something bigger than myself just by showing up. Don't underestimate the power of your dorm. Your dorm floor can quickly become your first mini-community. My roommates and I made an effort to celebrate everything – from birthdays with cupcakes and party blowers to decorating for holidays in our dorm. These small celebrations created such a warm, homey vibe and solidified our friendships. Just leaving your door open sometimes, or participating in floor events, can really open you up to meeting new people right where you live. Those casual interactions often blossomed into deeper connections. Saying 'yes' to spontaneous plans also made a huge difference. Like when my friends pushed me to go all out for Halloweekend – dressing up and just having fun. Those moments, even the slightly silly ones, are how you make memories and bond. I remember feeling a bit awkward at first, but everyone's in the same boat trying to make friends. Pushing past that initial discomfort was totally worth it, and that's how I really started to build my circle and feel like I belonged. It's not always easy, but actively seeking out opportunities to connect is crucial. Whether it's striking up a conversation in class, joining a study group, or just being open to new experiences, every little step helps. Remember, most people are looking to connect too! My first semester was a whirlwind of new experiences and learning how to navigate college life, but getting involved transformed it from just 'school' into a vibrant community where I truly felt at home.
