Menopause is often talked about in terms of hot flashes and mood swings, but one of the less discussed experiences is the sudden burst of energy that can strike when you least expect it. Many women like me find that as evening rolls in, when everyone else is winding down, our hormones seem to flip the switch, giving us a second wind of energy. This ‘rare form’ of menopausal personality can show up as restlessness or a burst of creativity and activity close to bedtime. It’s like your body’s internal clock is out of sync with the traditional notion of winding down for sleep. For me, it means my mind becomes sharp and my energy peaks just when others are nodding off, which can be both amusing and frustrating. Managing this can be a challenge. I've found that engaging in calming routines earlier in the evening, such as gentle stretching, meditation, or reading, helps signal to my body that it’s time to slow down. On other nights, I embrace this unexpected energy to catch up on hobbies or personal projects, turning what could be a source of insomnia into a productive time. Sharing these moments with other women in the midlife community creates a sense of camaraderie and support. Humor is a powerful tool—it helps us laugh through the mood swings and surprises of surviving adulthood and menopause. Remember, you’re not alone if your hormones have a mind of their own at night; embracing these quirks can make the journey more enjoyable.
