I wish people could see how much it takes for us chronically ill to get out and do things. ❤️‍🩹

... Read moreYou know that feeling when you finally make it out, and everyone just sees the smile, the laughter, the effort you put into simply showing up? Inside, for us with chronic illness, it’s often a whole different story. I wish people truly understood the invisible marathon we run just to participate in what others consider everyday life. The internal monologue leading up to an outing can be exhausting in itself. It starts with the physical symptoms: 'Ugh, my hip has been subluxating in my sleep,' or the constant discomfort of 'ugh so pinchy' nerves. Sometimes it’s the digestive issues that plague us, like being 'constipated in days' and just wishing for a bowel movement, or feeling like 'my stomach hurts so bad.' And let's not forget the relentless 'oh my head hurts so bad' that can make any light or sound unbearable. These are the battles fought before we even consider getting out of bed. Then there’s the underlying anxiety and fear. 'Check my heart rate,' I often tell myself, especially when experiencing 'funny heartbeats' or 'feeling so faint.' Every decision is a calculation of energy, pain, and potential consequences. The thought of having to 'do this today' when every fiber of your being is screaming 'be sick' is a heavy burden. It’s a constant negotiation with your own body, trying to convince it to cooperate for just a few hours. And for many of us, these invisible battles sometimes leave a visible mark, like the 'icd implant scar' from a life-saving device or a surgical procedure. But that scar, no matter how prominent, tells only a fraction of the story. It’s a physical testament to a condition, yes, but it doesn't show the 'ugh so pinchy' feeling in your nerves, or the sheer willpower it takes to fight off the urge to 'cancel my plans again' because you 'feel so exhausted.' The scar is a reminder of survival, but the daily struggle around it is the true endurance race. People might see the effort you put into looking 'normal' and put-together, but they don't see the internal negotiations: 'Do I have enough energy to shower and get ready?' 'Will this outing trigger another flare-up?' Living with chronic illness means learning to manage expectations, both your own and those of others. It’s okay to say no. It’s okay to rest. Learning to listen to your body, even when it’s screaming 'be sick,' is vital. For me, preparing for an outing often means days of careful planning, pacing myself, and accepting that I might feel even more 'exhausted' afterward. It's not about being weak; it's about being strategic with extremely limited resources. If you're also living with a chronic condition, whether it's one that might lead to an ICD, or simply chronic pain and fatigue, remember to be kind to yourself. Acknowledge your internal battles. Share with trusted friends what it truly means when you say 'I feel so exhausted' – not just sleepy, but bone-deep, soul-crushing fatigue that comes from constantly fighting your own body. That visible scar might be there, but the real story is in the invisible strength you show every single day. So next time you see someone with chronic illness out and about, remember there's a whole universe of invisible battles, big and small, that got them there. And for those of us living it, know that your strength is seen, even if the struggles aren't always.
