Confession: I Haven’t Had a Pelvic Exam Since 2014

Hot take… I don’t do annual pelvic exams 🙈

I used to go every single year — no hesitation, no excuses. But after my tubal ligation in 2014, something shifted. Once I didn’t need contraception anymore… I just stopped going.

No big dramatic reason. No symptoms. No panic.

I simply never made another appointment 😬

And now I’m realizing how common this might be. A lot of us fall off with checkups once we feel “fine,” or once the original reason we used to go (like birth control) isn’t there anymore.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who accidentally stopped going lol. 😅

When did you fall off with yours?

... Read moreMany women face changes in their health care routines after major events like tubal ligation. It's not uncommon to stop attending annual pelvic exams because the initial motivation—such as contraception management—is no longer relevant. However, experts recommend continuing these exams to maintain overall gynecologic health. Pelvic exams are valuable for more than just contraception purposes; they help screen for cervical cancer, detect infections, and identify other potential issues early on. Skipping these checkups due to feeling “fine” or no longer needing birth control can sometimes lead to delayed diagnoses. For women who have had tubal ligation, it's important to understand that this procedure prevents pregnancy but does not eliminate the need for routine pelvic care. According to many gynecologists, annual or regular pelvic exams tailored to personal health history can still play a crucial role in preventive health. Busy schedules, life changes, and a lack of symptoms often contribute to falling off routine checkups. Women may feel a false sense of security after stopping contraception, which can lead to neglecting important screenings. Encouraging open discussions and supporting each other to prioritize pelvic health helps break this pattern. If you’ve stopped having pelvic exams, consider scheduling one for peace of mind and to stay proactive about your reproductive health. Even in the absence of symptoms, routine exams help with early detection of conditions like HPV, ovarian cysts, or other gynecological concerns. Ultimately, pelvic health contributes to overall wellness and quality of life.

I was scheduled for my annual pap-smear last year and I completely forgot until recently, everything came back normal but it’s important to get them done every 5 years. And I had a pelvic exam done and I’m glad they did it bc I had ovarian cysts that they caught early! So no judgement here, but I would encourage you to get it done soon ❤️

I have never gone and I’m 26 years old. I really want to go this upcoming year though for the first time. I think it’s important.
