Postpartum: the change with each pregnancy

Each pregnancy brings its own unique challenges, and postpartum experiences are no exception. Four years ago, I found myself engulfed in postpartum depression, losing sight of who I was. This time, however, I’m not drowning my feelings in food or succumbing to panic. Instead, I’m here, present and in a much healthier mental state—and I truly mean that. There’s something about my second pregnancy that has instilled within me a profound sense of peace and tranquility. I've learned to slow down and appreciate motherhood, even amid the chaos, cherishing precious moments with my four-year-old before welcoming her brother.

Now, at six weeks postpartum with our second child, I clearly see the stark contrast to how I felt at this time during my first pregnancy. It’s incredible how each child shapes the experience, and I wouldn’t trade my journey from then to now for anything. Back then, I was a first-time mom simply trying to navigate uncharted waters. Today, I feel softer, calmer, and significantly less anxious about all the “baby things.”

That said, I won’t pretend that moments of panic and typical mom worries don’t still occur. What feels different this time is that I’m no longer hovering over others when they hold the baby. Instead, I allow myself to rest or tackle chores rather than giving in to anxiety. The overwhelming thoughts that once occupied my mind—stress, confusion, and the fog of survival mode—are now less frequent. I’ve released the belief that “no one can care for my baby like I do, even for five minutes.” My little one is surrounded by loving family members, just like his sister, so there’s no need to fret over minor details.

I feel more human now, liberated from the burden of intense “new mom” challenges. During nap times, I dedicate moments to connect with our daughter, ensuring she receives her special time with me. My fears of her feeling neglected have diminished, as this wonderful, magical four-year-old is all about “I’ll do it for my Brudder” and often volunteers to help. It amazes me how mature she is at such a young age, especially when she doesn’t have to be. I suppose that’s part of raising an independent little person—the curiosity, eagerness to assist, and endless questions: “Who? Why? What does that do?”

There’s hardly any space for postpartum depression to creep in when I’m busy enjoying the sight of my once tiny baby forming a bond with her little brother.

💜💙 All I can do is smile, rest, express gratitude to God, and breathe because this is the life I prayed for. Throughout my pregnancy, I sought strength for the postpartum days, hoping to feel more like myself while managing the demands of motherhood, establishing a new routine, and ensuring my four-year-old doesn’t feel sidelined. And that is exactly what I’m doing—living out all the things I prayed for during pregnancy.
