Myasthenia gravis

2025/3/2 Edited to

... Read moreMyasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that targets the neuromuscular junction, leading to significant muscle weakness that often worsens with activity and improves with rest. This condition primarily affects voluntary muscles, including those responsible for eye movements, facial expressions, and swallowing. Common symptoms include drooping eyelids (ptosis), double vision (diplopia), difficulty speaking, chewing, and even severe breathing issues in advanced cases. The underlying cause of MG is an immune response that mistakenly targets acetylcholine receptors, crucial for transmitting signals from nerves to muscles. While there is currently no cure for this condition, treatment can help manage symptoms effectively. Options such as medications to suppress the immune system and thymectomy (surgical removal of the thymus gland) may be considered based on individual circumstances. Early diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan are critical for improving quality of life for those affected by this debilitating disorder.
