What are some things that get you out of a funk?

... Read moreWe've all been there, right? Feeling stuck in an emotional funk, where everything just feels a bit… off. Lately, I've had my share of those days, and I realized how crucial it is to have a strategy to pull yourself out. That's why I started dedicating what I call a 'maintenance day for myself' – a day entirely focused on self-care and resetting my mood. It's not about being selfish; it's about refilling your cup so you can show up better for yourself and others. So, what exactly does a successful 'maintenance day' look like for me, and what are some things you can do to get out of a funk? It truly depends on what your body and mind need, but here are some of my go-to activities that consistently help me: 1. Prioritize Physical Comfort & Movement: When I'm in a funk, the first thing I tend to neglect is my physical well-being. So, I start by making sure I'm comfortable. This could mean taking a long, warm shower or bath with some calming essential oils. Then, I try to get some gentle movement in. It doesn't have to be an intense workout; a leisurely walk in nature, some stretching, or a yoga session can do wonders for shifting stagnant energy. The goal is to reconnect with your body and release some endorphins. 2. Nourish Your Body Intentionally: It's easy to reach for comfort food when you're feeling low, but a maintenance day is about intentional nourishment. I focus on preparing a healthy, hearty meal that I genuinely enjoy. Think fresh fruits, veggies, lean proteins – things that make you feel good from the inside out. Hydration is also key, so I keep a water bottle handy throughout the day. 3. Engage in Mindful Activities: To truly get out of a funk, I find it essential to quiet the noise in my head. This could involve journaling about how I'm feeling – just getting those thoughts out onto paper can be incredibly cathartic. Sometimes, I'll put on some calming music and try a guided meditation, even for just 10-15 minutes. Another great option is to engage in a creative hobby you love, like drawing, painting, knitting, or playing an instrument. These activities help anchor you in the present moment. 4. Declutter Your Space, Declutter Your Mind: For me, a messy environment often reflects a messy mind. So, an integral part of my maintenance day is tackling a small organizational project. It could be clearing off my desk, tidying up my bedside table, or organizing a drawer. The sense of accomplishment, no matter how small, can significantly boost my mood and create a clearer headspace. 5. Connect (or Disconnect) Consciously: Sometimes, connecting with a supportive friend or family member is exactly what I need. A quick chat can remind me I'm not alone. Other times, the best thing to do is disconnect entirely from social media and external pressures. Listen to what you need. Remember, a maintenance day is about being kind to yourself. It's a proactive step to prevent deeper slumps and a powerful tool for anyone wondering how to get out of a funk. Try incorporating some of these ideas into your own routine, and see how much better you feel!
