Your brain does some crazy things while you sleep. Here are 5 facts you probably didn't know:

1. That sudden "falling" feeling

Ever felt like you're falling and suddenly jerk awake? It’s called a hypnic jerk. If you fall asleep too fast, your heart rate drops quickly. Your brain panics, thinks you're dying, and sends a quick jolt to your muscles to "save" you.

2. Your brain literally washes itself

While you sleep, your cerebrospinal fluid flows faster and flushes out the "junk" built up during the day. No deep sleep = no brain cleaning. That’s why you wake up feeling foggy.

3. Complete silence is actually stressful

Can't sleep in a totally quiet room? Blame evolution. For our ancestors, dead silence meant a predator was hiding nearby. So, in complete silence, your brain starts overthinking to keep you alert.

4. Temperature beats being tired

Your body temperature needs to drop by about one degree for you to drift off. That’s why sleeping in a cool room under a heavy blanket feels way better than a warm room.

5. Light and sound program your dreams

What you see and hear right before closing your eyes impacts your dreams. Warm light (like a nightlight) signals safety to your brain. And steady background audio, like the sound of rain, blocks out random noises so your nervous system can fully shut down.

Need a little help winding down at night? 🌙

That’s exactly why we created our nightlight app. It features cozy visuals (like rain on a window and warm ambient light) paired with immersive, relaxing sounds. It’s the perfect combo to trick your mind into feeling safe, wind down, and drift off in minutes.

👉 Click the link in our bio to download the app and create your perfect nighttime vibe.

... Read moreI've always found sleep fascinating, especially after learning these five interesting facts about what goes on in the brain when we doze off. One thing I’ve noticed personally is that the hypnic jerk—the sudden falling sensation that wakes you up—often happens when I'm really tired but try to fall asleep too quickly. It's almost like my brain just gets confused about what's happening. Knowing that my brain thinks it's protecting me makes it less startling. The concept of the brain cleaning itself via cerebrospinal fluid during deep sleep explains why some days I feel so foggy when I don’t sleep well. It’s like the 'brain garbage' isn’t being flushed out, making focus and clarity difficult. I used to think that total silence was the best environment for sleep, but now I understand why absolute silence can be stressful. I started trying gentle ambient sounds, like rain or soft white noise, and it totally changed my sleep quality. It prevents my brain from worrying about what’s not there—like a predator—because evolution hardwired us to be alert in silences. Temperature definitely makes a huge difference. I kept my bedroom too warm for years, not realizing that dropping body temperature is essential to falling asleep. Now, I sleep with a cozy blanket in a cool room, and I fall asleep faster and wake up feeling more rested. Lighting has also been a game-changer. Using a warm nightlight rather than bright, harsh lights before bed helps signal safety to my brain. Plus, pairing that with relaxing sounds helps block distracting noises, making it easier to drift off. If you struggle with winding down, I truly recommend creating a nighttime routine that includes a cool room, warm ambient lighting, and soothing natural sounds. Apps that provide these combined experiences can be a great aid to calm your nervous system and promote better sleep. It’s amazing how these small adjustments, backed by brain science, can improve how you feel every day.
