DOES CARDIO ACTUALLY KILL GAINS?

✨ “Does cardio kill my gains?” Let’s talk about it 👀

You’ve probably heard:

➡️ “Cardio eats muscle.”

➡️ “Don’t do cardio if you want to build.”

➡️ “Cardio and lifting can’t mix.”

But here’s the TRUTH 👇

✅ Cardio doesn’t kill gains… unless you’re overdoing it + under-fueling.

✅ Strategic cardio can actually SUPPORT your training → better recovery, heart health, work capacity.

✅ The problem? When cardio replaces lifting… or when you’re in a huge calorie deficit.

✨ If your goal is building muscle:

1️⃣ Prioritize lifting + progressive overload first.

2️⃣ Keep cardio moderate (2–3x/week) → think walking, incline, cycling.

3️⃣ Fuel your body → cardio needs calories too!

💡 You don’t have to choose strength OR cardio.

But you DO need to be intentional with both.

👇 Have you ever been told to “cut out cardio” while building? Let’s chat in the comments!

... Read moreHey fitness fam! So, we've all heard the whispers, right? 'Cardio after lifting will eat your gains!' I used to stress about this so much, constantly wondering if my post-workout treadmill session was undoing all my hard work in the weight room. But after a lot of trial and error, and diving deep into the science, I've realized it's not about if you do cardio, but how and when you do it, especially after a workout. The main concern with cardio immediately after strength training is often referred to as the 'interference effect.' The theory is that endurance training can signal different adaptations in the body compared to strength training, potentially hindering muscle growth. While this can happen if you're training for a marathon and trying to build serious mass simultaneously, for most of us, it's not a major issue as long as we're smart about it. One key factor, as the article mentions, is *fueling*. This ties directly into the OCR insight about needing "plenty of PROTEIN to maintain muscle mass & enough calories overall to fuel your body properly." If you're doing intense cardio right after lifting and you're not consuming enough calories or protein, your body might start breaking down muscle for energy. That's why I always make sure to refuel with a protein-rich snack or meal within an hour or so of my entire workout (lifting + cardio). Think about it: your body needs those building blocks to repair and grow, and if you're burning through more energy with cardio, you simply need more fuel. Another thing to consider is the type of cardio. If you're doing high-intensity interval training (HIIT) right after a heavy leg day, you might be pushing your recovery too hard. Low-intensity steady-state (LISS) cardio, like a brisk walk or incline treadmill, is often a better choice post-lifting. It can actually aid recovery by improving blood flow without adding excessive stress. I personally love a 20-30 minute incline walk after my upper body days – it helps me cool down and feels great! Timing also plays a role. While the article suggests moderate cardio 2-3 times a week, if you're keen on doing it after your workout, try to keep it separate from the muscle group you just trained intensely. For instance, if you just crushed a leg workout, maybe save your intense cardio for another day, or opt for a gentle upper body machine. If you must do cardio on the same day, putting a few hours between your lifting and cardio sessions can also help, allowing your body to initiate some recovery processes first. Ultimately, it comes down to listening to your body and being strategic. Cardio is fantastic for heart health, endurance, and overall well-being. Don't let the fear of 'killing gains' stop you from incorporating it. Just remember to prioritize your lifting, fuel your body properly with enough "PROTEIN" and "calories" (as the OCR insight reminds us!), and choose your cardio wisely. It's totally possible to be strong, fit, and have a healthy heart all at once!
