Does your trash can have a stench to it???
Check this out guys! We can actually get rid of that nasty smell inside your garbage can and leave it sparkling clean in UNDER 5 MINUTES! Without making a big mess on your driveway!
Impossible you say?! I think not! 🥳
Who else needs their cans cleaned!?
Okay, so we all know the struggle: that awful smell creeping out of the trash can, even after you've emptied it. It's truly one of those household chores we all dread, right? My main article shares a super quick hack, but sometimes, our bins need a little extra love to get them truly sparkling clean and smelling brand new. When I first started tackling my smelly bins, I tried everything. What I've learned is that there are a few simple steps and tricks that make a huge difference, especially if you want to keep them odor-free for longer. Step-by-Step for a Deep Clean (when 5 minutes isn't quite enough!): Empty Completely: First things first, make sure the can is completely empty. If there's any lingering gunk, scrape it out. Rinse It Out: Using a garden hose, give the inside of your trash can a good rinse. This helps to loosen any dried-on food or residue. Scrub with a Cleaner: Now for the real work! I usually mix a few squirts of dish soap with hot water, or for a stronger clean, I'll use a cup of white vinegar and a sprinkle of baking soda. This combo is fantastic for cutting through grease and neutralizing odors. Grab a long-handled scrub brush (this is a lifesaver for avoiding bending over too much!) and really scrub down the inside, paying extra attention to the bottom and any crevices. You'll be amazed at the grime that comes off! Rinse Thoroughly (Again!): Rinse out all the soap and loosened debris. Keep rinsing until the water runs clear. Disinfect (Optional but Recommended): For an extra layer of cleanliness, especially if you've had something really gross in there, you can spray the inside with a diluted bleach solution (about 1/2 cup bleach per gallon of water) or a strong disinfectant. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse again. Remember to wear gloves and do this in a well-ventilated area! Dry Completely: This is crucial for preventing mold and mildew, which can cause new odors. Tilt the can upside down or leave it in the sun to air dry completely. The sun's UV rays actually help to naturally disinfect too! My Favorite Odor-Fighting Hacks for Everyday: Baking Soda Power: After cleaning, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda at the bottom of your trash can before putting in a new liner. It's a fantastic natural odor absorber. Lemon Peels: Toss a few used lemon or orange peels into the bottom of your bin. They release a fresh scent and help combat smells. Kitty Litter: Believe it or not, a thin layer of unused kitty litter at the bottom can absorb a lot of moisture and odor. Newspaper: Layering newspaper at the bottom can absorb liquids and help keep the can drier. I've found that doing a thorough clean like this every month or so, combined with these everyday tips, keeps my trash cans sparkling and truly odor-free. It's such a relief to open the garage door and not be hit with a nasty smell! It really does make a difference in the overall freshness of your home. You'll thank yourself later!
