POV - the rules were never about safety

I learned very early on in life, that the rules my mother drilled into my head.

Were for her benefit…

To protect her social standing..

How others of the congregation perceived her.

- Smile at everyone

- Sit Straight

- Don’t cross your legs.

- Speak only when directed to answer.

These were my mothers attempts to teach me not to be ‘tempted’

... Read moreGrowing up, I often felt the weight of unspoken expectations that shaped much of my daily behavior. The rules my mother insisted on—always smiling, sitting up straight, avoiding crossing my legs, and speaking only when spoken to—were more than just manners. They were a way to preserve a certain image, one that protected her reputation within our community. Looking back, I realize these rules were less about safety or personal well-being and more about controlling how others perceived us. In communities where social standing and acceptance are paramount, such rules become tools of conformity, sometimes at the expense of individual expression and comfort. These limitations can feel suffocating, leaving one to constantly monitor their actions to avoid judgment or exclusion. The intention behind the rules was not about protecting me from harm but about shielding a social identity that valued appearances over genuine connection. Living within those confines made me question how much freedom I truly had. It made me wonder if these constraints were a way to prevent me from becoming 'tempted' or stepping outside defined roles, keeping me safely within a prescribed mold. This reflection resonates deeply when considering the stories like "The Ghost of Blackmore," which explore themes of control, fear, and the unseen forces that bind us. For anyone who has experienced similar restrictions, it can be enlightening to unpack the reasons behind such rules. Understanding that they may serve purposes far beyond safety can empower us to reclaim our agency, challenge inherited limitations, and prioritize authentic self-expression. This shift is crucial for breaking cycles of control and fostering environments where individuals are valued for who they truly are, not just how well they conform to societal expectations.
