I used to constantly wonder why people hurt my feelings, only to realize that often, it stemmed from an unvoiced or unrealistic expectation I had placed on them. It wasn't about them maliciously intending to cause pain, but rather a clash between my mental framework and their reality. This realization was freeing because it shifted the focus from blaming others to empowering myself. Instead of feeling no more expectations from anyone, which can lead to detachment, I learned to manage them more wisely. So, how do we actually go about letting go of expectations? For me, it started with self-awareness. I began to consciously identify what I was hoping for from a person or a situation. Is it fair? Is it realistic? Sometimes, just acknowledging these unspoken desires helps you understand their potential to cause distress. If I expected a friend to always drop everything for me, I was setting myself up for disappointment the moment they had other commitments. Once I recognized this pattern, I could work towards accepting their choices without feeling personally slighted. Another powerful tip I learned is to focus on what you can control. We can't control how others behave, but we can absolutely control our reactions and our boundaries. This doesn't mean becoming cold or indifferent; it means cultivating emotional resilience. When expectations give us more pain, it's a signal to look inward.
