... Read moreWhile I absolutely adore getting creative with intricate designs and vibrant colors on my custom cakes, like this peanut butter chocolate beauty with its elegant star-like patterns and swirls in coral, blue, and green, sometimes you need a dessert that's big on flavor but low on fuss. That's where dump cakes truly shine! I've been exploring them lately, especially for those times when I need something delicious for a group or just a quick treat.
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by baking or just need a super easy dessert, a dump cake is your new best friend. The name might not sound glamorous, but trust me, the results are surprisingly delicious! It gets its name because you literally “dump” all the ingredients into a baking dish, bake it, and voilà – a warm, gooey, and satisfying dessert. They're fantastic for potlucks, family dinners, or when you're craving something sweet but don't have hours to spend in the kitchen.
One of my absolute favorites, and a perfect way to satisfy those chocolate cravings, is a classic Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake. It’s incredibly simple and always a crowd-pleaser. Here’s a super easy recipe I often turn to:
Easy Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
1 (21-ounce) can cherry pie filling (or any fruit pie filling you love!)
1 (15.25-ounce) box chocolate cake mix (any brand works!)
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted
Optional: 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts for extra crunch
Instructions:
Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Layer the Fruit: Pour the entire can of cherry pie filling evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. If you're feeling fancy, you can smooth it out a bit, but it's not strictly necessary.
Sprinkle the Mix: Evenly sprinkle the dry chocolate cake mix directly over the cherry pie filling. Do not stir! This is key for that delicious, gooey texture.
Add Butter: Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the dry cake mix. Again, avoid stirring. The butter will seep down and create a wonderful crust.
Add Nuts (Optional): If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the top.
Bake: Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly, and the cake mix has absorbed most of the moisture. The edges might be slightly crisp, and the center will be wonderfully gooey.
Serve: Let it cool for a few minutes before serving warm. It’s absolutely divine with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream!
This recipe is incredibly versatile. You can swap out the cherry pie filling for pineapple (a popular choice!), apple, peach, or even a mixed berry. For the cake mix, you can use yellow, vanilla, or even a spice cake mix for different flavor profiles. I've also tried adding chocolate chips or shredded coconut to the top for extra texture and taste. While this isn't a "gravity cake" in terms of structure, it certainly feels like magic how easily it comes together and disappears! It might not have the intricate frosting decorations of a custom birthday cake, but it's a fantastic alternative when you need a delicious dessert for many people without the fuss of multiple layers or complex techniques. It's a testament to how even the simplest "dump" approach can yield incredibly satisfying results.
