tips every BRIDE should know✨

hi girlies 🤍

it’s been almost 3 mths since my proposal and the wedding planning is starting 🤭 its been such an exciting journey so far! since then, i’ve visited at least 5 bridal boutiques and safe to say, i finally found my dream gown!!! 👰🏻‍♀️

my bridal consultant shared with me was that some popular gowns get booked out 8–12 months in advance. so if you're getting married on an auspicious date - do try to start gown shopping even earlier!

💖 sharing a few tips i wished i knew before going for my bridal gown fittings:

✨ 1. do the sit test

the gown may look stunning while you're standing but feel completely different when you're seated. you’re likely to spend hrs sitting during your ceremony, banquet, photo sessions, so its impt to make sure the gown remains comfortable, flattering and easy to move around in~

✨ 2. try different silhouettes

have an open mind. before visiting bridal boutiques, i kinda alr envisioned the type of dress i wanted. surprisingly, the styles i thought i’d love didn’t flatter me as much as i expected 🥲 my bridal consultant suggested that i try on an A-line lace gown, which wasn’t something i wanted to try, but to my surprise it ended up being one of the most flattering silhouettes on me 🤣 the dress you least expect may end up being the one 🤍

✨ 3. take pictures & videos!

this is one of my biggest tip. i realized that many gowns look gorgeous in person but photographed very differently. bc your wedding photos will become ur lifelong keepsakes, u gotta make sure that looks beautiful both in real life and on camera 🥹 looking back at photos and videos also helped me compare gowns more objectively and narrow down my final choice.

P.S. not all bridal boutiques allow personal photography. most will take photos on their devices and let you review them afterwards. usually they’ll share the images with you after you’ve placed a deposit or confirmed your package.

✨ 4. come with makeup and hair done

this helped me visualise my bridal look so much better.

i’d also recommend bringing stick-ons and wearing nude undergarments, esp if you’re planning to try on dresses with sheer panels or low backs. if you’re planning to try fitted mermaid gowns, i’ve heard of many brides swear by spanx for the snatched waist and extra lift for ur 🍑🍑

✨ 5. bring your bridesmaid / support team

most bridal boutiques will allow you to bring one or two guests along for your fitting. gown shopping w ur loved ones is truly a once in a lifetime experience and it’s also helpful to get honest feedback from people you trust. im quite decisive, so i knew which dress best suited me, that said, it was v reassuring when all my girls unanimously agreed on the gown I ended up choosing 🤭🤭

✨ 6. be open when browsing gowns at the shop

some dresses don’t look particularly impressive on the rack but completely transform once they’re on. that was exactly what happened with the gown i eventually chose 🤪 you might think that you only want a bright ivory/ diamond white gown, but certain shades can complement your skin tone much better than others. so trust the process and your bridal consultant~

✨ 7. ensure that your bridal boutique is the authorise retailer

this is important esp if you’re looking at bridal designer gowns!! many bridal designers work exclusively with selected boutiques in sg. choosing the authorised retailer ensures that you’re receiving an authentic gown sourced directly from the designer, proper designer support for alterations & customisations or additional fabric requests. this also protects the designer’s craftsmanship and ensure standards of ur gown.

i eventually chose my dream gown w The Proposal bc i knew that i wanted a galia lahav gown and they’re the authorised retailer carrying the brand in sg. their pricing was also v competitive compared to the other bridal boutiques like TE/ Ivory. they also carry a beautiful selection of luxury designer labels so for brides who value authenticity, quality and peace of mind, i’d defo recommend checking them out 🤍

bonus tip: let your bridal consultant know your budget from the start. being transparent helps them curate options that best align with your preferences and budget, making the entire process much more efficient and enjoyable for you ☺️

which tip surprised you the most? or if you already selected ur gown, what tips would you share? 👇🏻

... Read moreOne of the most valuable lessons I learned during my bridal gown journey was simply how much the gown needs to work for you beyond just looking beautiful. For example, when I did the sit test, I realized that a dress that looks perfect standing up quickly became uncomfortable after sitting for even a short while. Brides definitely should keep in mind that during the ceremony and banquet, you'll likely be seated for hours, so prioritizing comfort is crucial. Another insight from personal experience is keeping an open mind when it comes to silhouettes. Before visiting boutiques, I was pretty set on a certain style, but trying on different shapes like A-line and fit-and-flare opened my eyes to what really flattered my figure. Sometimes the gown you least expect to like can end up being your favorite, so be open to your consultant's recommendations. When it comes to capturing memories, bringing a camera or smartphone for photos and videos during fittings helped me see how gowns look on camera versus in person. Lighting, angles, and fabric textures can change the dress’s appearance significantly, which is important since your wedding photos will last a lifetime. Additionally, preparing with your bridal hair and makeup done during gown fittings greatly helped me visualize the complete bridal look. Bringing nude undergarments or even shapewear like Spanx made trying on fitted mermaid gowns easier and gave a better idea of the overall silhouette. Lastly, choosing an authorized retailer like The Proposal, especially for designer labels such as Galia Lahav, ensured authenticity, access to designer alterations, and reliable support. For brides planning to invest in a signature designer gown, this step is indispensable. Budget transparency is another tip worth mentioning — sharing your budget early with your consultant made the whole process smoother and more tailored to my preferences. For anyone on this wedding dress journey, these experiences might help you feel more confident and joyful as you select your perfect gown.
