From my personal experience, a key step is to shift from frustration to curiosity about what your body is actually communicating. Instead of pushing harder with the usual calming techniques, try to observe which emotions or physical sensations are most intense. Sometimes, the nervous system is stuck in a state of dysregulation because underlying stressors or triggers remain unaddressed. It helps to integrate a combination of approaches such as mindful breathing, gentle movement, grounding exercises, and even professional guidance from trauma-informed therapists or bodyworkers. I’ve found that combining nervous system regulation practices with creating safe, supportive environments—like spending time in nature or connecting with empathetic people—can gradually calm the nervous system over time. Also, allowing yourself permission to feel whatever arises without judgment—whether it’s irritability, numbness, or racing thoughts—can reduce the mental resistance that often prolongs dysregulation. Education about how the nervous system works offers reassurance and empowers you to adapt your strategies. For example, understanding that hypervigilance or brain fog are signs of a nervous system on high alert helps reduce self-blame and shifts focus to healing. Finally, remember that recovery is rarely linear. Feeling stuck at times is normal and can be part of the process. Persist gently, seek support when needed, and honor your nervous system’s timeline. Over time, with patience and varied strategies, regulation tools can become more effective and your sense of balance will improve.
