As a middle school teacher passionate about literacy, I've found that motivating students to read can be both challenging and rewarding. Inspired by the approach shared with Neuro D Teacher, one method that works well is integrating technology and personal interests into reading activities. Students today are constantly interacting with digital devices, so tapping into familiar platforms through 'swiping' or using video content to suggest books can make reading feel more accessible and enjoyable. For example, creating short, engaging videos about different books or reading challenges can replicate the interactive experience they enjoy online. Another valuable strategy is curating a diverse classroom library that aligns with students' varied interests and reading styles. Middle school students often have differing preferences, so including genres from fantasy to non-fiction and graphic novels encourages exploration and ownership over their reading choices. In my experience, direct engagement with students about their reading helps build a positive reading culture. Organizing small group discussions, where students share their thoughts and favorite parts of books, empowers them and builds community. Finally, don't underestimate the power of patience and persistence. Sometimes students take time to find books they connect with, but consistent encouragement and exposure to a variety of materials often lead to unexpected enthusiasm for reading. By blending digital tools, personalized book selections, and supportive social interactions, educators can create an inviting environment where middle school students not only improve literacy skills but actually enjoy the reading journey.
