During my research and exploration of the Inca Empire, I was fascinated to learn how their remarkable organization and control were established without a written language. Instead, the Quechua language played a vital role in connecting vast regions. It was spoken throughout the empire, allowing messengers to transmit orders effectively across cities, armies, and resources. What struck me most was the Inca’s reliance on memory and oral tradition. Although they used no script, they developed complex systems such as the quipu—knotted cords that helped record information—and coupled it with the Quechua language to govern efficiently. This shows how oral culture can maintain a sophisticated level of administration. Even today, millions of people in South America still speak Quechua, which preserves not only communication but cultural identity and heritage from the Inca civilization.
