... Read moreOverintellectualization refers to the tendency to analyze and rationalize emotional experiences excessively, often as a coping mechanism to avoid fully feeling uncomfortable emotions. As a member of Gen Z navigating a world flooded with information, I've noticed many people—including myself—lean too heavily on intellectual understanding while neglecting the actual felt experience. This tendency can feel like a double-edged sword. On one hand, being able to understand why we feel a certain way can bring clarity and help us make sense of past experiences. On the other, if we get stuck in our heads, we might miss out on truly processing emotions that reside in the body. For example, knowing intellectually that you tend to people-please because of childhood expectations doesn’t necessarily ease the tension or chest tightness you might feel in those moments. From my experience, shifting focus from just "knowing" to "feeling" involves tuning into physical sensations: the tightening in your chest, a cramping stomach, or a racing heartbeat. These bodily signals are part of the nervous system’s language and can guide you to the core of your emotional state. I found that practices such as mindful body scans, breathing exercises, and somatic awareness can help bridge this gap. Instead of only talking through problems, you start to listen to your body's responses, which often hold clues to unresolved emotions or trauma. It’s an important journey beyond traditional talk therapy—recognizing that our emotional intelligence isn’t just in the mind, but deeply connected to bodily sensations. Connecting with your body offers a fuller emotional processing, helping to reduce anxiety and overthinking. If you struggle with being overly analytical about your feelings, consider incorporating body-focused techniques to complement your intellectual understanding. This integrated approach can provide a more balanced emotional experience and promote healing from within.
