do you struggle feeling sensations in your body? ❤️
Many people experience difficulty sensing their own bodily sensations, especially during periods of chronic stress. From my experience as a therapist, this often happens because the nervous system adapts to ongoing overwhelm by muting or suppressing internal signals as a protective mechanism. When life demands constant attention to external factors such as others’ needs or potential threats, the brain prioritizes external awareness over internal sensations. If you find that you can’t identify specific sensations or feel like everything blurs into one overwhelming experience, it can be helpful to approach this with curiosity rather than frustration. For me and many clients, mindfulness and gentle body awareness practices have been key starting points. Simple techniques like focusing on the breath, scanning the body for tension without judgment, or mindful movement can gradually retrain attention inward and gradually restore a connection to bodily sensations. It’s important to remember that this disconnection isn’t a problem to fix overnight; it’s a natural response to stress and overwhelm. Recognizing this helps reduce self-criticism and opens space for compassion toward oneself. Over time, with patience and consistent practice, the nervous system can recalibrate, allowing clearer perception of internal cues like temperature, pressure, or subtle emotional states. If you’re navigating such experiences, consider seeking supportive environments like therapy or group sessions that encourage safe exploration of bodily awareness. Sharing these challenges can also reduce isolation and provide encouragement. Ultimately, learning to feel and listen to your body again can enhance emotional regulation, stress management, and overall well-being.
