Hey everyone! I’m so excited to share my absolute favorite way to prepare tilapia – a simple yet incredibly flavorful steamed dish that’s become a staple in my kitchen. If you're anything like me, you love a good easy recipe, especially after a long day, and this steamed tilapia recipe totally fits the bill. It's healthy, quick, and bursting with delicious Asian-inspired flavors! I remember when I first started experimenting with cooking fish at home. Steaming always seemed a bit intimidating, but once I tried this method, I was hooked! It’s surprisingly straightforward and locks in all the moisture, giving you the most tender, flaky steamed tilapia every single time. Plus, it’s a fantastic light meal that doesn't compromise on taste. My Go-To Easy Asian Steamed Tilapia Recipe This recipe focuses on fresh ingredients and a simple sauce that truly elevates the tilapia fillet. You can use whole tilapia too, but I find fillets are quicker and easier for weeknight dinners. What you'll need: 2 tilapia fillets (about 4-6 oz each) 1-inch piece of ginger, thinly sliced into matchsticks 2-3 green onions (scallions), cut into 2-inch sections, then thinly shredded for garnish 1-2 sprigs of fresh cilantro (optional, for garnish) A few slices of lemon (if you like a citrusy kick!) For the Sauce: 2 tablespoons light soy sauce 1 tablespoon water or chicken broth 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance flavors) A pinch of white pepper Let's get steaming! Prep the fish: Pat your tilapia fillets dry with paper towels. This helps the flavors adhere better. Place a few ginger slices and green onion sections directly on top of each fillet. You can also place some underneath. If using lemon, put a slice or two on top. Set up your steamer: Bring water to a boil in a wok or large pot with a steaming rack. Once boiling, carefully place your plate with the tilapia into the steamer. Steam it: Cover and steam for about 8-12 minutes. The exact timing depends on the thickness of your fillets. A good rule of thumb: fish is done when it turns opaque and flakes easily with a fork. For a whole tilapia, it might take 15-20 minutes. Don't overcook, or it will become dry! Make the sauce: While the fish is steaming, whisk together all the sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Finish & Serve: Once the fish is cooked, carefully remove the plate from the steamer. Discard the cooked ginger and green onions from on top of the fish (they've done their job!). Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the steamed tilapia. Garnish with fresh shredded green onions and cilantro. If you're feeling extra fancy, you can heat a tablespoon of oil until smoking hot and drizzle it over the green onions right before serving for a sizzling aroma! Pro Tips for the Best Steamed Tilapia: "How long to steam tilapia fillet?" This is a question I get asked a lot! For a typical 1-inch thick fillet, 8-10 minutes is usually perfect. If it's thinner, check at 7 minutes. Thicker? Go up to 12. You want it just cooked through, still moist. "Steamed tilapia with lemon": Absolutely! Lemon slices placed directly on the fish while steaming add a wonderful freshness. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice at the end is also divine. Freshness is Key: Always use fresh tilapia if possible. If using frozen, make sure it's fully thawed and patted dry. Don't Crowd the Steamer: Give your fish room to steam evenly. If you're cooking a large batch, do it in batches. This dish is fantastic served with a side of steamed rice and some blanched greens. It's become one of my most requested meals, and I hope it becomes yours too! Give this easy steamed tilapia recipe a try, and let me know how you like it!
