How we survived long distance for a year

Ironically, a good majority of our relationship was long distance from the beginning. Then when I moved to Arizona it completely changed things. This is what we did:

1. We started doing monthly check-ins which helped us tremendously ☺️

2. We did a lot of virtual dates (watching movies, activities)🍿

3. We found ways to send each other items for big events (Valentine’s Day, birthday etc)💕

4. We made it a point to see each other every month (rotating who travels)✈️

5. We slept on the phone from time to time 📱

⭐️Overall rating: 9.5/10: long distance is hard no matter what you do

... Read moreNavigating a long-distance relationship can sometimes feel like you're trying to bridge the gap between two different worlds, much like those long travel times between cities on a map. I know the feeling of looking at a map with routes like '1 day 8 hr' and wondering how we'd ever make it work. But after successfully enduring a year apart with my partner, I've learned that while challenging, it's absolutely possible to not just survive, but to thrive! Beyond the amazing tips I’ve already shared, here are some deeper insights and practical strategies that truly helped us strengthen our bond across the miles. 1. Master the Art of Intentional Communication: It’s not just about monthly check-ins; it’s about making every interaction count. My partner and I quickly realized that 'checking in' meant more than just a quick call. We started scheduling daily 'good morning' texts and 'good night' calls, even if they were short. We also dedicated specific times each week for deeper conversations, discussing our highs, lows, and any worries. This intentionality helped us feel truly connected and heard, despite the physical distance. Share the small, mundane details of your day – it helps build a sense of shared life. 2. Get Creative with Virtual Experiences: While watching movies together online is fun, push the boundaries of virtual dating! We discovered so much joy in cooking the same recipe simultaneously while on video call, sharing our culinary successes (and failures!). We also explored virtual museum tours, played online co-op games, or even had 'study dates' where we worked on our individual tasks but kept a video call open in the background. The goal is to create shared experiences that mimic being physically together, even when a flight is a day's journey away. 3. Surprise & Small Gestures Go a Long Way: Beyond birthdays and Valentine's Day, unexpected gestures can fuel the romance. I loved surprising my partner with a food delivery from their favorite local restaurant when they had a tough day, or sending a handwritten letter just because. These little acts of thoughtful kindness showed we were always thinking of each other, making the geographical distance feel a little less daunting. Think about what would genuinely brighten their day and make them feel seen. 4. Build Individual Lives (and Share Them!): It might sound counterintuitive, but maintaining your independence and a rich life outside the relationship is crucial. When you do have your calls, you'll have more exciting stories and experiences to share, preventing conversations from becoming stale. My partner and I encouraged each other to pursue hobbies, spend time with friends, and develop personal interests. This not only makes you a more interesting person but also reduces the pressure on your partner to be your sole source of happiness. 5. Plan for the Future (and the Next Visit): Having a light at the end of the tunnel, even if it's far off, is incredibly motivating. My partner and I always had our next visit planned, even if it was months away. Knowing when we'd next see each other, or discussing our long-term goals for closing the distance, provided immense comfort and something tangible to look forward to. This forward-thinking approach helped us navigate the tougher days, reminding us why we were putting in all the effort.

These are good tips! I’ve tried long distance before, but it just wasn’t working for me. I want to be with someone in person. My hearts not in long distance.
