When you live with ADHD, routines matter!

Honestly y'all... I struggle daily with ADHD. I have to make a conscious decision to overcome the challenges I face because of it. Organization and routines have never been my strong suit because of my ADHD, but simple routines and tricks definitely help! Anyone else struggle with ADHD? 🫶🏼 #mentalhealthawareness #adhd #momsoflemon8 #routine #cleaning

... Read moreIt's so true what the original post mentioned – living with ADHD often feels like a constant battle against disorganization and overwhelm. For the longest time, I thought routines just weren't for me. My brain thrives on novelty and spontaneity, which, while fun, can lead to absolute chaos when it comes to daily responsibilities. But after years of trial and error, I've realized that routines aren't about stifling creativity; they're about creating a predictable framework that frees up mental energy for the things that truly matter. If you’re an adult with ADHD, especially if you’re a busy parent, establishing a solid routine and a practical daily checklist can be a game-changer. Let's talk about the 'MORNING ROUTINE' first, because how you start your day often sets the tone for everything that follows. For someone with ADHD, waking up can feel like hitting a reset button without a clear instruction manual. My biggest struggle used to be decision fatigue right out of bed. What do I wear? What's for breakfast? What needs to be done *first*? To combat this, I’ve found that front-loading decisions the night before is incredibly helpful. Lay out clothes, pack lunches (if applicable), and even set out breakfast dishes. When the alarm goes off, I try to avoid hitting snooze repeatedly – I put my alarm across the room so I have to get up. My simplified morning sequence goes like this: hydrate immediately (a big glass of water), a quick stretch or five minutes of mindful breathing, then a super simple, pre-planned breakfast. Getting dressed is next, and then I quickly glance at my daily checklist to see the top 1-2 priorities for the day. This cuts down on the 'what now?' feeling. As a 'MOM OF 3' (or any busy parent), this becomes even more complex. The mornings aren't just about my routine, but orchestrating tiny humans! This is where flexibility and a 'good enough' mindset are crucial. My personal experience has taught me that involving the kids in age-appropriate ways (e.g., they pick their clothes, help set the table) can help, but also having a backup plan for when things inevitably go sideways. Perfection is the enemy of progress here. Some days, my routine is a masterpiece; other days, it's glorified damage control, and that's okay. The key is to keep coming back to the framework. Now, for the 'ADHD DAILY CHECKLIST FOR ADULTS' – this is my external brain! I used to try to keep everything in my head, which, as you can imagine, led to forgotten appointments and missed deadlines. I prefer a hybrid system: a digital task manager for big, recurring items, and a small physical notebook for my daily to-do list. When creating your checklist, break tasks down into the smallest possible steps. Instead of "Clean Kitchen," try "Load Dishwasher," "Wipe Counters," "Sweep Floor." This makes tasks feel less daunting and provides more opportunities for dopamine hits as you check things off. I also categorize my daily tasks: "Must Do," "Should Do," and "Could Do." This helps prioritize when my executive functions are low. Adding a reward system, even a small one like 15 minutes of scrolling TikTok or a cup of my favorite tea after completing a "Must Do" task, can be incredibly motivating. And don't forget to schedule in breaks! Our ADHD brains need intentional downtime to avoid burnout. Reviewing your checklist at the end of the day or the beginning of the next day helps you adjust and learn what works and what doesn't. Remember, building effective routines and checklists is an ongoing process of self-discovery and iteration. Be patient and kind to yourself through it all; every small step towards a more organized day is a victory!
