The thought of giving up my favorite foods was daunting, and I especially wondered about sushi. It's often seen as healthy, but I soon learned that what kind of sushi makes all the difference when you're dealing with fatty liver.
Many people ask, 'is sushi good for fatty liver?' Traditional sushi can be a mixed bag. While fish can be a good source of omega-3s, some rolls have a lot of white rice, which is high in refined carbs, and sugary sauces that aren't ideal. That's why my big discovery of vegan sushi, or specifically, those amazing plant-based Bulgogi Kimbap rolls, was such a game-changer! I found them on a specialty website, but now I'm always on the lookout in health food stores. These frozen, microwaveable options make healthy eating so convenient, especially when I'm busy.
So, what should you eat with fatty liver? My journey has taught me a lot. The core principle is reducing inflammation and excess fat in your liver. This means focusing on:
Whole Grains: Swap white rice for brown rice or quinoa. These keep your blood sugar stable and provide fiber.
Plenty of Vegetables: Load up your plate! Leafy greens, broccoli, bell peppers – they're packed with antioxidants and fiber. My plant-based kimbap is great because it's full of diverse veggies.
Lean Proteins: Plant-based proteins like lentils, beans, tofu, and tempeh are fantastic. If you eat meat, choose lean options like chicken breast or fish high in omega-3s (like salmon, in moderation).
Healthy Fats: Avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are your friends. They help reduce inflammation.
Fruits (in moderation): Berries are excellent due to their antioxidant content. Just be mindful of high-sugar fruits.
And what about the big no-no? Sugary drinks are a massive risk for fatty liver. This was one of the hardest things for me to cut out, but it's crucial. Sodas, sweetened teas, fruit juices with added sugar – they all contribute to fat buildup in your liver. I swapped them for water, unsweetened herbal tea, or water infused with lemon and cucumber. It felt like a small change, but it's made a huge difference in how I feel and my progress.
Beyond diet, staying active and maintaining a healthy weight are key to fatty liver treatment. Losing those 30 pounds wasn't just about fitting into old clothes; it was about giving my liver a fighting chance. It’s a holistic approach. I'm not on any specific medicine for it, but relying on lifestyle changes, and praying for complete reversal.
