Time for bouldering!

Come climb with me. My cousin and I decided that for our workout today we would try bouldering. So first you gotta have the essentials: chalk and shoes. They will let you rent climbing shoes from the front desk. You do have to buy your own chalk or just find some around the gym lol.

Before we started climbing we needed to warm up. The best warm up is to stretch your upper body. Your arms will be so sore after climbing. You have to have some strong upper body muscles. We did some pull ups too. I did a few to prove to my cousin that I can actually do one.

My cousin was a lot more skilled than me and was able to climb the harder paths. I was just there for fun and for a good workout. I did the first two levels of difficulty mostly. This gym had 5 levels of difficulty. Of course I had to take a silly BeReal while we were there too.

I’m trying to get back into the gym and I’m really enjoying trying new things. It’s helping me get back into the enjoyment of working out. I’ve currently taken a bit of a break from the gym due to starting a new job and not having time. But there is always time to prioritize your health.

... Read moreSo you're curious about bouldering, just like I was! After my first session, I realized there’s so much more to it than just grabbing holds and pulling yourself up. If you're wondering how to start bouldering, let me share some tips I wish I knew before my first visit! Getting Started: Your First Visit The very first step is finding a bouldering gym near you. Most gyms are super welcoming to newcomers. When you arrive, you'll usually sign a waiver and get a quick orientation. Don't be shy to ask the staff questions – they're there to help! You’ll see those vibrant colorful climbing holds plastered all over the bouldering walls, just waiting for you to conquer them. Bouldering Essentials: Gear Up! The original article touched on shoes and chalk, and those are definitely your top priorities. For climbing shoes, most gyms offer rentals, which is perfect for your first few visits. They should fit snugly, almost uncomfortably, to give you precision on small holds. As for chalk, it's essential for keeping your hands dry and improving grip. You can often buy a chalk bag and chalk at the front desk, or sometimes even borrow some if you're lucky! I also recommend bringing a water bottle to stay hydrated, and wearing comfortable, flexible clothing that allows a full range of motion. You might also spot some climbers with a brush – that's for cleaning holds, which helps improve grip for everyone. Warm-up & Beginner Training Trust me, a good warm-up is non-negotiable! Before you even touch a wall, spend 10-15 minutes getting your blood flowing. I focused on stretching my upper body, especially shoulders, wrists, and fingers. Dynamic stretches are great. The original article mentioned pull-ups, and they are fantastic for building strength, but don't worry if you can't do many at first! Even just hanging from a black pull-up bar or using an assisted pull-up machine helps. Light cardio and some bodyweight exercises like push-ups and squats can also prepare your body for the demands of climbing. This kind of bouldering training for beginners will make a huge difference in preventing soreness and injury. Bouldering Basics & Techniques for Newbies Once you’re warmed up, it’s time to hit the wall! Don't just rush into the hardest routes. Look for the easier problems, usually indicated by specific colors or tags. The key is to use your feet as much as your hands. Your legs are much stronger! Try to keep your arms straight when possible to conserve energy, and focus on moving smoothly. I learned that focusing on footwork and body positioning really helps. Don't be afraid to try different ways to solve a problem – that's part of the fun! Safety First: Falling Gracefully Bouldering is done without ropes, so falling is part of the experience. Gyms have thick mats, but it's important to learn how to fall safely. Try to land on your feet, bending your knees to absorb the impact, and then roll onto your back. If you have a friend, spotting them can also add an extra layer of safety, especially on taller walls. I hope these extra bouldering tips for beginners help you feel more confident for your first time. It's a fantastic workout and a great way to challenge yourself both physically and mentally. Give it a try, you might just discover a new passion!

Training your hip flexors is VITAL to climbing performance. They help you get your feet onto higher holds and help massively with core control. This variation of leg lifts is particularly helpful with stemming moves and moving your feet up the wall! Make sure you have targeted hip flexor work

Never climbed and probably will never be a climber. But it was worth a shot! I conquered V-0 and V-1 in two hours and I’m proud! The harder routes will definitely take longer but it was a great confidence boost and I can’t wait to be on the walls more in the future! 📍 Bouldering Project, Gowanus
