This sounds so silly but I just get nervous

It’s a strange feeling, but in my experience, teenage boys are some of the most reckless group. If I spot them hanging around a bus stop or corner store, I get a twinge of unease just walking past. I find myself crossing the street to avoid them, never making eye contact. Once, a boy even shoved his friend into me to start a conversation. When a group approaches on the sidewalk, my heart races. Am I overreacting? I worry they’ll mock me or worse, even though I’ve already heard rude remarks for just walking by. Anyone else relate? Is this a normal feeling?

... Read moreMany people experience feelings of unease or anxiety when encountering groups of teenage boys, especially in public spaces like bus stops or street corners. This reaction can stem from personal experiences, societal perceptions, or past incidents involving reckless or uncivil behavior from youth. The keyword "Stir the pot: do you guys ever feel edge around groups of teenage boys" highlights how common this sentiment is and opens a conversation on street safety and anxiety. This type of street anxiety is linked to a natural human response to perceived threats or unpredictability. Groups of teenagers, particularly boys, may appear more intimidating due to their energetic or sometimes reckless nature. This can trigger a heightened state of alertness or nervousness in passersby, significantly impacting their comfort during daily routines. Addressing this discomfort involves understanding its roots and developing practical strategies. First, recognizing that these feelings are valid and shared by many can reduce self-doubt. It's important not to dismiss one’s instincts but to assess the situation calmly. Avoiding eye contact or crossing the street, as described by the author, are common coping mechanisms but improving personal safety through awareness and confidence can empower individuals. Communities are also encouraging conversations about women’s safety and street anxiety, as indicated by hashtags like #WomenSafety and #StreetAnxiety. Engaging in dialogue through forums or local groups can offer support and advice. Additionally, local authorities and community organizations often provide resources and programs aimed at reducing street harassment and improving public safety. Ultimately, understanding that nervousness around groups of teenage boys is a shared human experience can foster empathy and open discussions on safe public spaces. Building supportive networks and advocating for respectful behavior in youth can help alleviate these concerns and promote a healthier social environment for everyone.

I’m an old bitch and I drive so I don’t encounter many groups of young men. But I used to live in a bad neighborhood when I moved out on my own. I learned to carry myself high but give respect. No one ever approached me. But then again I’m old and that was years ago.
