Why Does Bella Tap on Everything? 💜

💜 LESSON OF THE MORNING

Why does Bella tap on everything?

One of the questions I hear most is why Bella taps on tables, counters, chairs, walls, and so many other objects.

The objects may change, but the tapping stays the same.

For Bella, this isn't random. It's one of the ways she explores, regulates, and experiences the world around her.

The more I learn from Bella, the more I realize that understanding autism starts by looking beyond the behavior and becoming curious about the reason behind it.

💜 Week 5: Living What We Learn

... Read moreFrom my experience supporting children who exhibit repetitive behaviors like tapping, I’ve come to appreciate these actions as vital communication and coping mechanisms. Tapping can serve multiple purposes: it might provide sensory feedback that calms the individual, help with self-regulation during overwhelming moments, or act as an exploratory tool to better understand their surroundings. For Bella, tapping on different objects is not random but a consistent way to engage with the world tactilely. Understanding that such behaviors are meaningful rather than merely disruptive shifts how caregivers and communities approach autism. It encourages patience and curiosity, promoting acceptance and appreciation of neurodiversity. When we observe and inquire about the reasons behind behaviors like Bella’s tapping, we invite deeper empathy and more effective support strategies. Many individuals with autism, especially those who are nonverbal, rely on repetitive motions to express feelings or manage sensory input. Recognizing this can improve communication and reduce frustration on both sides. Instead of discouraging tapping, embracing it as part of Bella’s learning and sensory process allows her to flourish in her unique way. Sharing this insight encourages others to look beyond surface behaviors and consider what drives them. It’s a lesson in living what we learn—adapting our understanding to create more inclusive and supportive environments for those on the spectrum.
