If your fight, as an American leftist, does not start with a fight to end harmful, violent and often fatal sanctions against the country you are aiming to stand in solidarity with, you are not taking the issue srsly. #greenscreen
From my experience engaging with social justice movements, one thing has become crystal clear: the impact of sanctions goes far beyond political rhetoric. Sanctions labeled as non-violent economic tools often bring devastating consequences to everyday people, disrupting access to essential goods, healthcare, and basic freedoms. The phrase "Sanctions Destroy Democracy" strongly resonates because these punitive measures often silence dissent and weaken democratic institutions in targeted countries. Standing in solidarity means actively opposing policies causing harm—not just offering words of support. American leftists have a unique position to influence public opinion and policy through grassroots organizing, awareness campaigns, and direct advocacy. Recognizing that sanctions are not abstract concepts but violent actions resulting in loss of life is the first step towards authentic solidarity. It's important to challenge narratives that justify sanctions as necessary for geopolitical goals, especially when they perpetuate inequality and suffering. Building connections with activists and communities affected by sanctions worldwide enriches the movement and deepens our understanding of how these policies affect real human lives. Ultimately, dismantling harmful sanctions aligns with the broader fight for social justice, human rights, and democracy itself. This is a call to prioritize ending violence in all its forms—including economic sanctions—so that solidarity transcends symbolism and drives real change.
