How I cope with cancer

United States
2025/1/17 Edited to

... Read more"Cuando el cáncer pensó que iba a acabar conmigo." – This phrase, which I often saw in my mind, perfectly captured the initial terror and despair I felt when facing my diagnosis. It truly felt like my world was collapsing, like I couldn't breathe, and my own lungs were giving out. There are moments in a cancer journey when the weight of it all can feel utterly suffocating, like that heartbreaking lyric, "won't you lend your lungs to me, mine are collapsing." I remember those days distinctly, feeling a profound sense of vulnerability and isolation. The news hit me like a physical blow. Suddenly, every breath felt heavy, burdened by uncertainty and fear. It wasn't just my body fighting; it was my spirit, my mind, struggling to comprehend a future that now seemed so fragile. The sheer exhaustion, the side effects of treatment, the endless appointments – it all chipped away at my reserves, making it hard to imagine finding strength, let alone joy. It honestly felt like all the air was being squeezed out of me. But in those darkest moments, something remarkable started to happen. People around me, both familiar and new, began to "lend their lungs." My family became my unwavering support system, holding my hand through tough treatments and simply being there. Friends checked in, offered distractions, and reminded me of who I was beyond the illness. My medical team, with their tireless dedication, became the pillars of my physical fight. Their expertise and compassion were the breath of fresh air I desperately needed. It wasn't just about medicine; it was about the collective human spirit lifting me up when I felt I had none left. Learning to cope with cancer is a journey of rediscovering how to breathe again, sometimes in entirely new ways. It meant finding small victories each day: managing to eat a full meal, having enough energy for a short walk, or simply finding a moment of peace. I started incorporating small practices into my daily routine to help me reclaim a sense of control and find my internal "lungs." One thing that truly helped me was mindfulness. Even just five minutes of focusing on my breath, feeling it expand and contract, helped ground me when anxiety threatened to overwhelm me. Connecting with others who had walked a similar path, whether online or in local support groups, made me feel less alone. Hearing their stories, sharing my own fears and triumphs, was incredibly therapeutic. It was like we were all lending each other our lungs, sharing the burden and helping each other breathe. I also learned the importance of advocating for myself. Asking questions, seeking second opinions, and communicating my needs to my care team ensured I felt heard and empowered in my treatment decisions. And while it's easy to get caught up in the negativity, I tried my best to focus on moments of gratitude – a beautiful sunset, a kind word, the warmth of a blanket. These small anchors helped prevent my spirit from completely "collapsing." This journey has taught me immense resilience. There are still days when the shadow of cancer looms, but I now know that even when it feels like I can't breathe, there are ways to find oxygen – through support, self-care, and an unwavering commitment to finding moments of life and joy. If you're out there feeling like your own lungs are collapsing, please know you're not alone. Don't be afraid to reach out for that metaphorical breath of air. We all need it sometimes.

How I actually use journaling to cope
Here’s the part people don’t tell you about journaling: Most days, it’s not deep. It’s not poetic. It’s not some magical breakthrough moment. It’s messy. Repetitive. Sometimes kind of boring. You’ll write the same thing over and over. Circle the same thought from five different angles
