I Knew the Twist… But Did I Really? 🫠

Just finished It’s Not Her by Mary Kubica and I’m honestly still sitting with it.

This was my first book by her, and I was locked in from the start. The pacing? Fast. The tension? Steady. The short chapters made it super easy to keep flipping pages.

About halfway through, I started putting pieces together and formed a theory. I actually suspected who it might be… but because I read a lot of thrillers, I second-guessed myself. You know how it goes — if the story points to someone too obviously, it’s usually someone else.

So I put that suspicion on the back burner.

Well… 👀

Let’s just say I wasn’t completely shocked in the end. And I think that’s why I’m hovering between 3.5 and 4 stars. It was definitely twisty and entertaining, just not jaw-dropping for me personally.

Still a whirlwind read though — and I’d read more from her.

✨ If you love: • Fast-paced domestic thrillers

• Multiple suspects

• Building tension

• Trying to outsmart the author

You might enjoy this one.

Thriller readers — did it fool you? Or did you see it coming too?

... Read moreReading 'It’s Not Her' by Mary Kubica was an absorbing experience that perfectly showcases the strengths of domestic thrillers. The novel’s setup, involving a local woman missing under mysterious circumstances, kept me intrigued right from the start. What stood out to me was how the story’s pacing and short chapters created a real momentum that made it hard to put down. As someone who enjoys solving puzzles within thrillers, I found myself actively piecing together clues alongside the narrator. The twist, while clever, had moments where it felt somewhat predictable because of my previous exposure to many similar stories. Yet, Mary Kubica’s skillful tension-building and intricate plotting prevented the story from feeling stale. The array of multiple suspects added layers of complexity that kept me guessing until the later chapters. What this book reminded me is the appeal of a well-crafted psychological thriller: it's not always about a jaw-dropping twist but about the journey of suspense and character dynamics. 'It’s Not Her' blends themes of deception, trust, and fear effectively, making it a compelling option for fans of the genre who appreciate trying to outsmart the author. Based on my experience, if you enjoy fast-paced narratives that keep the pages turning and feature domestic thriller elements like a missing person case and escalating tension, this novel is worth a read. It also offers an excellent starting point if you haven’t explored Mary Kubica’s work before. Overall, 'It’s Not Her' balances entertainment with thrilling suspense, making it a worthwhile addition to the collection of anyone who loves psychological and domestic thrillers. If you have read it already, I’d be curious: did the twist catch you off guard, or did you see it coming as I did?
