DO YOU WANT TO FINALLY GET A PULL-UP?! This is how

Getting a pull-up all by yourself is a new level of awesome. Maybe it’s something you’ve thought would be cool to do one day (and you can!) but it takes some work to build enough strength to do it.

These are things you can start incorporating into your workouts you already do to progress in strength to do a pullup. It’s not going to happen overnight but if you don’t challenge yourself and put in the work it’ll never happen.

I would recommend starting at #1 and #2 if you’re newer to the gym until you build up your strength and confidence before moving onto #3 . Work on progressing on the first two over time (prioritize form first) so either increase your weight as you get stronger, slow down your tempo, increase your reps or add in things like pause reps to continue to progress.

Is this a goal of yours?

... Read moreAchieving your first pull-up feels like unlocking a superpower, and trust me, it's totally within reach for every woman! When I first started my journey, I felt intimidated, but dedicating myself to foundational strength exercises made all the difference. The original article already highlighted the crucial steps, but let's dive even deeper into how you can really maximize your efforts, especially focusing on form and muscle engagement, which are key themes in many of your questions! First up, LAT PULLDOWNS are your best friend for building that essential back strength, specifically targeting your *latissimus dorsi muscle*. Many people just pull, but focusing on correct lat pulldown female form is a game-changer. Sit with your thighs securely under the pads. Instead of just yanking the bar down with your arms, think about pulling your elbows towards your hips, squeezing your shoulder blades together at the bottom. Imagine you're trying to crack a walnut between your shoulder blades. Keep your chest up slightly and avoid leaning back too much – a slight lean is okay, but don't turn it into a full body swing. This focus ensures your *back muscles are truly engaged*, not just your biceps. To progress, try varying your grip (wide, neutral, close) to hit different parts of your back, or implement slower tempos to increase time under tension. Next, let's talk about those wonderful ASSISTED PULL-UPS, whether you're at the gym using an assisted pull-up machine or using BANDED PULL-UPS. The goal here is to gradually reduce the assistance until you can support your full body weight. For the *assisted pull-up machine*, make sure you're getting a full range of motion. Lower yourself completely until your arms are straight, then pull up until your chin clears the bar. Control both the upward and downward phases – don't just let the weight stack drop! If you’re doing *banded pull-ups*, choosing the right resistance band is crucial. Start with a thicker band that gives you more assistance, allowing you to complete 6-8 reps with good form. Loop it around the bar, step into it, and perform your pull-ups. As you get stronger, move to thinner bands. I found that really focusing on the eccentric (lowering) phase of banded pull-ups helped me tremendously. Lowering slowly for 3-5 seconds builds incredible strength and control. A common mistake I see women make (and I made it myself!) is not fully understanding what back muscles are engaged during pull-up movements. It’s not just your lats! Your rhomboids, trapezius, and even your core play a huge role. Consciously trying to feel these muscles working will drastically improve your efficiency. Always prioritize pull-up exercise back muscles form over rushing reps. It's better to do fewer, perfect reps than many sloppy ones. Remember, consistency is key. Don't get discouraged if progress feels slow. Every single lat pulldown, every assisted pull-up, brings you closer to that incredible moment when you finally perform your first unassisted pull-up. Keep challenging yourself, focus on that mind-muscle connection, and celebrate every small victory along the way!
