honest take: I hate having ADHD

I know I’m supposed to embrace my ADHD. I’ve read all the “it’s a superpower” posts. But sometimes I just hate it. I hate how hard basic things feel. I hate the guilt, the decision fatigue, the way I’m either hyperfocused or completely frozen.

I don’t want to make every hard day into a fun neurodivergent quirk. I just want to feel like I’m not broken. Some days are better than others. But on the rough ones, I need more than motivation hacks. I need people to get what this feels like, you know?

💬Comment & tell me: what’s the part of ADHD that actually hits the hardest for you?

... Read moreI totally get it. There are days when the weight of ADHD feels crushing, and honestly, the last thing I want to hear is how it's some kind of secret advantage. For me, it's the sheer mental exhaustion from constantly battling my own brain. It's the overthinking every minor interaction, every decision, until I'm completely paralyzed. It's the silent shame when I find myself forgetting tasks that were just assigned, or the panic that sets in when I realize I'm missing deadlines again, despite my best intentions. These aren't just minor inconveniences; they're daily battles that chip away at your sense of competence and self-worth. The constant guilt that dogs my steps is perhaps the hardest part. Guilt for not being "normal," for letting people down, for not being able to just "try harder." Society often expects a linear progression in life, and when your brain operates on a different wavelength, it can feel incredibly isolating. This isn't just about struggling with organization; it's about the emotional toll of feeling perpetually behind, misunderstood, or inefficient. It's the detrimental impact on self-esteem that slowly erodes your confidence, making you question your capabilities even when you're incredibly talented in other areas. And let's not even start on the 'decision fatigue.' Every single choice, no matter how small – what to eat, what to wear, which email to open first – feels like a monumental effort. My brain gets overloaded, and then I freeze. Suddenly, a simple day becomes an exhausting reality of pushing through mental blocks, not because I'm lazy or don't care, but because my executive functions are just… offline. It’s like trying to run a marathon with invisible weights on your ankles. This cycle of trying, failing, feeling guilty, and then struggling to start again creates an overwhelming sense of dread. I've learned that rejecting toxic positivity is crucial for my mental health and for genuinely processing my experiences. It’s okay to acknowledge that some aspects of ADHD truly suck. It doesn't mean I don't love myself, or that I don't see any strengths in my neurodivergent mind. It just means I'm being honest about the daily grind and the unique challenges it presents. Finding spaces where others share these candid feelings makes such a difference. Knowing that someone else understands the agony of hyperfocusing on something completely irrelevant while urgent tasks pile up, or the despair of an utterly unproductive day, helps me feel a little less alone. This shared understanding, this communal sigh of relief, is often more valuable than any "hack" or motivation trick. Sometimes, just being seen and heard in your struggle is the most powerful support of all.

I hate how my dad is like ADHD is the worst thing that’s wrong with me then I’m pretty lucky. Which I think is a very disrespectful thing to say.
