Warm bread, happy heart
One of my favorite simple pleasures is preparing a homemade tostada using Jamón Serrano, a dry-cured Spanish ham that adds a wonderful depth of flavor to this dish. To start, I toast fresh bread until it’s warm and slightly crisp—it’s amazing how the texture of warm bread can elevate the whole experience. I spread garlic confit butter on the toast, which imparts a mellow and rich garlic taste without overwhelming the palate. Next, I add a layer of creamy cheese—usually cottage cheese, but ricotta is a lovely substitute if you prefer something silkier and more delicate. What really brightens each bite for me are the slices of fresh figs, their natural sweetness balancing the savory notes of the ham wonderfully. I finish with a drizzle of balsamic glaze; its tangy and slightly sweet profile complements the figs and ham perfectly. Each element works together in harmony, creating a sophisticated yet comfort-food feel. This recipe is incredibly versatile. I often experiment by swapping ingredients based on what I have at home, like using different types of bread or adding herbs such as fresh thyme or rosemary for an extra aromatic touch. Whether as a light lunch or an elegant appetizer, a Tostada de Jamón Serrano is satisfying and heartwarming—truly proof that warm bread can create a happy heart.
