Myth Of The Day: Autism Edition

FACT

“When working with a relationship-based affect approach tailored to the child’s individual differences, as a child’s language and cognitive abilities improve, so do his theory of mind and his ability to empathize.” ICDL

Early intervention is huge.

I know how difficult it is to get your child enrolled in regional programs like ALTA due to long waitlists and lengthy processes. But there are therapies and practices we can integrate into our daily lives to help our children at home.

The UC Davis Brain Institute is an amazing resource with courses that teach how to implement ABA therapy at home.

The school district has much to offer as well. The first step is knowing who to ask for help.

... Read moreMany people have misconceptions about autism, particularly around the abilities of children on the spectrum to empathize or understand others' perspectives—often referred to as "theory of mind." Contrary to common myths, children with autism are capable of developing empathy and theory of mind skills, especially when interventions are personalized and relationship-based. Research from credible sources such as the International Council on Developmental Learning (ICDL) highlights that as a child's language and cognitive skills improve, so do these social cognitive abilities. Early intervention is critical in supporting children with autism. Although accessing regional programs like ALTA can be challenging due to waitlists and administrative processes, parents and caregivers can implement effective therapies at home. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, for example, is a widely recognized approach that can be tailored for daily use outside formal clinical settings. The UC Davis Brain Institute offers courses designed to help families learn how to apply ABA techniques effectively at home, making therapeutic practices more accessible. Moreover, many school districts provide valuable support programs and resources for children with autism and their families. Understanding who to approach within the educational system can be the first step toward securing individualized assistance and inclusive opportunities for children. This network of support is essential for fostering an environment where children on the spectrum can thrive. By embracing vulnerability and inclusion, and by using resources and community knowledge shared through platforms like #autismtips and #inclusionmatters, parents and caregivers can greatly enhance their child’s development and quality of life. Dispelling myths about autism not only educates the public but also empowers families to advocate for their children with confidence and compassion.

A woman with braided hair, wearing a black top and cap, stands confidently with hands on hips. Text overlays describe her 'AFTER MY DIAGNOSIS' state: speaking her truth, being authentically herself, standing behind choices, self-love, and accommodating her needs.
Why ADHD and autism diagnoses matter
I thought I was autistic for a year or so before I was formally diagnosed. And as far as ADHD goes, I was pretty sure I had it for several years before I was evaluated. So, imagine my lack of surprise when I was dual evaluated for both and it was determined that I am indeed AuDHD. But something
