Having undergone weight loss surgery myself, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to manage cravings post-surgery. Cravings after WLS often stem from the body’s adjustment to reduced food intake and changes in hormones that affect hunger signals. One thing I’ve learned is that preparing nutritious, satisfying meals like avocado toast can curb cravings by providing healthy fats and fiber that keep you fuller longer. It’s also crucial to address emotional triggers for cravings. I started tracking my eating habits and moods, which helped me identify times when I was more likely to want to eat out of boredom or stress rather than actual hunger. When that happens, I try to distract myself with a walk or a hobby. Hydration plays a big role too — sometimes thirst disguises itself as hunger. Drinking enough water throughout the day has helped me reduce unnecessary snacking. Another tip is to incorporate protein and fiber-rich foods into your meals, as they are more satisfying and can minimize the urge to binge on unhealthy snacks. Following social media accounts and communities focused on bariatrics, like those with #bariatricsurgery and #eatwithme, provided me with great recipe ideas and encouragement. Remember, cravings after WLS are normal, but with mindful eating, emotional awareness, and supportive resources, you can successfully navigate these challenges and maintain your progress.
