made fresh beancurd skin!!

... Read moreMaking fresh beancurd skin at home is a rewarding cooking experience that allows you to enjoy this traditional ingredient in a variety of ways. The process involves gently simmering fresh soy milk without additives until a delicate film forms on the surface. Carefully lifting this layer off produces thin sheets of beancurd skin, also known as yuba, which are prized for their silky texture and mild flavor. From my own experience, using high-quality soy milk such as Whampoa brand ensures a clean taste and consistent skin formation. It helps to maintain a steady simmer and avoid stirring, as this can disrupt the delicate film. Patience is key when repeatedly lifting off the skin to gather sufficient pieces; with 1 cup of soy milk yielding around 15 sheets, you can prepare enough for diverse dishes. Beancurd skin is incredibly versatile. I enjoy adding it to light soups, where it softens while retaining a subtle chewiness that complements vegetables and broth. It also absorbs flavors wonderfully when used in sauces, adding texture and depth to stir-fries or braised dishes. For a savory treat, frying beancurd skin until crisp creates a delightful snack or topping. Additional tips: After collection, allow the beancurd skin sheets to air dry for a short period if you don’t plan to use them immediately; this prevents sticking. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator if used within days or freeze for longer storage. Homemade fresh beancurd skin not only enhances your meals but also connects you to a rich culinary tradition. Experimenting with recipes using this ingredient can bring unique texture and nutrition to your cooking adventures.

I’m a super fussy eater when it comes to soy beancurd, it has always only been Rochor Beancurd (Geylang branch) for me. But one of my colleagues bought this for me some time back and I was honestly mind blown 🤯 The only downside? The stall is all the way in Chinatown… way too far for my usual
