Before I was a resident doctor 👩🏻‍⚕️

Before I became a resident physician I had a lot of different types of jobs including: tutoring ( which was a very flexible gig), working as a medical assistant, working as a scribe in the ED ( exceptional experience !), working as a front desk receptionist at a gym. All experience is good experience !

... Read moreBefore I ever dreamt of donning that crisp white lab coat, my journey to becoming a resident doctor was a winding path filled with unexpected turns and invaluable lessons. It wasn't just about acing exams; it was about building a foundation of resilience and understanding through diverse experiences. When I look back at my 'JOBS I HAD Before I was a resident doctor,' each one played a crucial role in shaping the physician I am becoming. Take my time tutoring at Mathnasium during high school, for instance. It taught me patience and how to break down complex concepts into understandable pieces – skills I now realize are vital for explaining diagnoses to patients and teaching junior colleagues. It wasn’t just about math; it was about connecting with people and empowering them to learn. Then came college, where roles like Medical assistant and Gym receptionist might seem disparate from medicine, but they were anything but. As a medical assistant, I got my first real glimpse into patient care, understanding the flow of a clinic, and the importance of compassionate communication. Even working as a Gym receptionist honed my organizational skills, ability to multitask, and interact with a wide range of personalities – all crucial for the chaotic environment of medicine. My experience as a Scribe in the ED was truly transformative. It was intense, fast-paced, and often emotionally charged. I learned to think quickly, prioritize, and observed firsthand the incredible dedication of emergency physicians. More than just medical terminology, I saw the human side of medicine – the fear, the relief, the raw emotions. It was in those moments, standing beside doctors making critical decisions, that my resolve to pursue medicine solidified. It wasn't just a career anymore; it was a calling to serve and make a tangible difference. Many aspiring doctors imagine themselves in a lab coat from day one, but for me, the path was about collecting these diverse life experiences. Each job, no matter how small, added a layer to my understanding of people, systems, and myself. It taught me that genuine care isn't confined to a hospital; it's about being present and empathetic in every interaction. Looking back, those experiences became my personal 'training ground.' They taught me adaptability, resilience, and the invaluable lesson that every person has a story, and every role contributes to the bigger picture. So, when I finally put on that lab coat as a resident, it wasn't just a uniform; it was a culmination of all those moments – the late nights tutoring, the busy clinic days, the adrenaline of the ED, and the friendly faces at the gym. It was a symbol of a journey well-traveled, preparing me not just with knowledge, but with empathy, grit, and a profound appreciation for the human experience. My advice to anyone on a similar path? Embrace every opportunity, because 'All experience is good experience!' and you never know how it will empower you for what's next.
