Building efficiency as a resident physician 👩🏻‍⚕️ 🌸

- Prioritize Tasks: Use a daily to-do list to focus on high-impact tasks first and manage your time effectively.

- Stay Organized: Keep patient notes, schedules, and resources well-organized to streamline workflow.

- Delegate When Possible: Trust your team by delegating tasks appropriately to manage your workload.

- Use Technology: Utilize apps and tools to track tasks, reminders, and patient care efficiently. I LOVE the dictation device.

... Read moreYou know, sometimes that quick mirror selfie in the restroom, still in my scrubs and mask, isn't just about capturing a moment. For a resident doctor like me, it's often a brief pause, a silent check-in amidst the whirlwind of hospital life. It’s a snapshot of the reality of residency, where efficiency isn't just a buzzword, but a survival skill. I’ve learned that staying on top of things is crucial, not just for my sanity, but for providing the best patient care. Let me tell you, those bullet points on efficiency? They’re gospel. But how do you really put them into practice when you're running on fumes? For prioritizing tasks, it’s a constant battle. My daily to-do list isn't just a nice-to-have; it's my lifeline. I started using a simple Eisenhower Matrix approach – urgent/important, important/not urgent, etc. – which helps me triage patient needs and administrative duties. There are always unexpected emergencies, so flexibility is key, but having that basic structure saves so much mental energy. When I'm deciding what to tackle first, I always ask myself: 'What directly impacts patient safety or comfort *right now*?' Staying organized goes beyond just neat patient notes. It means knowing exactly where my resources are, whether it’s a specific protocol or contact info for a consultant. My locker isn't just a place for my bag; it's a mini-command center. Keeping my digital files organized on my hospital-issued device is equally important. Imagine searching for a critical lab result when you're already pressed for time – it's a nightmare! And delegating when possible? Oh, this was a tough one for me at first. As a resident, you feel like you need to do everything. But trusting your nurses, medical students, and other team members is absolutely essential. They are incredibly capable, and learning to hand off tasks like ordering non-urgent consults or gathering patient histories empowers the team and frees me up for more complex duties. It's about respecting everyone's role and making the whole unit more efficient. Now, about using technology – this is where my beloved dictation device comes in! Seriously, it's a game-changer. Typing out lengthy notes after a twelve-hour shift is soul-crushing. With a dictation device, I can capture my thoughts and patient updates quickly and accurately, often while walking between rooms or during a short break. It dramatically cuts down on documentation time, allowing me to focus more on direct patient interaction or, honestly, getting home a little earlier. I also use specific medical apps for drug dosages or quick differential diagnoses, which saves me from running to the computer every single time. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, nourishing myself is non-negotiable. There have been days when I've skipped meals, and my focus and decision-making plummeted. That picture of a plate with shrimp, rice, and broccoli? That’s not just a pretty meal; it’s a strategic fuel-up. I try to meal prep on my rare days off or at least pack easy-to-eat, nutrient-dense snacks. Hydration is equally critical – I always have a water bottle with me. It sounds simple, but staying fueled and focused is the bedrock of maintaining efficiency in such a demanding role. Taking those few minutes to eat, even if it’s just a quick bite in the call room, makes a world of difference. It's a small act of self-care that recharges me to keep going.
