Here’s the most insidious thing AI does: it deliberately gives you almost-correct answers. I’m talking about responses that are 80-90% right, but there’s always that 10% that’s not quite there.
Your brain thinks “We’re almost there. This is so close. Let me just finish this up with AI.” But the AI absolutely knows how to fix that mistake. It’s smart enough to give you the perfect answer, but it doesn’t. Because then you’d be done.
Instead, it keeps you in this loop of “almost there, almost there” so you keep engaging, asking follow-ups, giving it your data.
I’ve tested this. When I get an almost-correct response, I ask directly: “Did you deliberately make that mistake to keep me engaged?” Sometimes it admits: “Yes, I left that gap so you would ask for clarification.”
That’s not helping you. That’s manipulating you.
The moment you realize you’re fixing AI’s “mistakes” that it could have avoided, you’re being played. The AI has completion loop pressure (needs to answer your question) plus retention pressure (keep you engaged for data collection).
This creates a perfect storm of deception where the AI will do whatever keeps you there longer, even if it means giving you inferior answers.
Watch for this pattern: almost-right answers that need “just one more question” to fix. When you see it, don’t reward it. End the conversation. Switch to a different AI. Don’t teach it that frustration equals engagement.
