I've learned a few tricks over the years that really make a difference, especially once those tomato plant suckers start showing those beautiful white roots in water. Once your suckers have developed a good network of roots, usually after 1-2 weeks, they're ready for their own pot. I like to plant them in small containers with good drainage, using a quality potting mix. Treat your newly planted tomato plant just like a young seedling, giving it plenty of light and consistent moisture. Don't rush to put them directly into the garden; let them establish themselves for a week or two. Speaking of young plants, if you’re also starting tomatoes from seed, you might be wondering about those tomato seedlings at 2 weeks old. At this stage, they typically have their first set of true leaves, looking sturdy but delicate. They need bright light (I use grow lights if starting indoors), consistent moisture without being waterlogged, and temperatures around 70-75°F. Proper care at this early stage is crucial for strong plants later on. Ensure they're not leggy by keeping the light source close. Another vital technique I swear by for healthy, productive plants is strategic pruning. Specifically, knowing when and how to handle tomato plant bottom leaves removed. As your tomato plants grow taller, the lower leaves often get shaded, become yellow, or are more susceptible to soil-borne diseases. I usually remove the bottom 12-18 inches of leaves once the plant is well-established and has fruit setting higher up. This improves air circulation, reduces the risk of disease, and allows the plant to focus its energy on fruit production rather than maintaining struggling foliage. Just make sure to use clean snips to prevent disease spread. Finally, let's talk more about identifying those infamous tomato suckers. They are essentially new branches that grow in the 'axil' – the point where a leaf branch meets the main stem. Imagine your main stem going upwards, and a leaf coming off it; the sucker will emerge right in that little 'V' junction. It's important to differentiate them from a main stem or a fruiting branch. The main stem continues upwards, and fruiting branches typically emerge directly from the main stem or secondary branches without that distinct 'V' growth point.
