... Read moreOkay, so you've tried the basic recipe, right? But let me tell you, there are a few extra tricks I've picked up that make these homemade apple pie egg rolls even more mind-blowing. If you're looking to elevate your dessert game or just want to make sure every batch is perfect, here are my go-to tips! First off, let's talk about that perfect crisp. Getting that beautiful golden crunch on your egg rolls is absolutely key. I always make sure my oil is at a consistent medium heat, around 350-375°F (175-190°C). Don't overcrowd the pan, or the oil temperature will drop, leading to greasy egg rolls instead of perfectly crisp ones. Peanut or vegetable oil works best for a neutral flavor that lets the apple pie goodness shine through. And remember, they cook fast, so keep a close eye on them to prevent burning! Beyond the classic apple pie filling, don't be afraid to experiment! While Granny Smiths are a fantastic choice for their tartness and firm texture, Honeycrisp or Fuji apples also work wonderfully for a slightly sweeter, firmer bite. You can even add a touch of lemon juice to your apple filling while cooking; it brightens the flavors and helps prevent the apples from browning too quickly. For an extra kick, a pinch of nutmeg or allspice complements the cinnamon perfectly. I sometimes add a tablespoon of chopped pecans or walnuts to the filling for a textural crunch – it’s a total game changer! Now, for the rolling and sealing secrets. The rolling technique is crucial to prevent any delicious filling from leaking out during frying. Make sure you don't overfill your egg roll wrappers; a heaping tablespoon is usually plenty. And that little bit of water for sealing? Don't skip it! It creates a strong bond. I find pressing firmly along the edges with my fingers ensures a really tight seal. If you're making a big batch, keep the unused wrappers covered with a damp cloth to prevent them from drying out and becoming brittle. These apple pie egg rolls are amazing on their own, especially fresh out of the cinnamon-sugar mix. But if you want to elevate them, a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream is heavenly. For dipping, I love a simple caramel sauce or even a quick vanilla glaze made with powdered sugar and milk. They're also fantastic with a light dusting of powdered sugar for a more elegant look, perfect for impressing guests or just making your dessert feel extra special. Can you make them ahead? Absolutely! You can prepare the apple filling a day in advance and store it in the fridge. You can even assemble the egg rolls and freeze them uncooked on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer them to a freezer bag. When you're ready, just fry them from frozen, adding a couple of extra minutes to the cooking time. As for leftovers (if there are any!), they can be reheated in an air fryer or oven for a few minutes to regain their crispiness – microwaving will make them soggy, trust me! Honestly, sometimes I just don't have time for a whole apple pie. These crispy egg rolls give you all that warm, spiced apple goodness with a much quicker prep time and a fun, handheld format. Plus, they’re so easy to share (or keep all to yourself!).
