11km Winter Run
Sore, stiff legs from yesterday's leg day. Super cold and windy. Strong winds from the West / North-West. Got some great speed heading East on Bayly with the wind pushing strong.
Heading North on Westney was a struggle. A few snowy icy patches on the way but generally not bad.
Crossed some other runners on the way too.
Winter trail running presents unique challenges that make each run a rewarding experience. On my recent 11.48 km run, I encountered strong north-west winds that pushed me east along Bayly Road, giving me a great speed boost when the wind was at my back. The return segment heading north on Westney Street was much tougher, with the wind against me and several icy and snowy patches to carefully navigate. Running in cold winter conditions requires proper preparation. Layering is key—wear moisture-wicking base layers and wind-resistant outerwear to stay warm without overheating. Footwear with good traction is essential to prevent slips on icy spots, especially on bridges and shaded paths where snow can linger. I also found that planning routes exposed to wind carefully can make a big difference. Using wind direction to your advantage on parts of the course can help maintain a faster pace, while mentally preparing for the tough sections makes the effort more manageable. After completing this 11+ km run in about 1 hour and 9 minutes at an average pace of 6:02 per km, I can say winter running is challenging but highly gratifying. The crisp air, quiet trails, and the physical test it offers provide a fresh motivation to keep pushing through the cold months. Sharing my experience hoping to inspire others to embrace winter trail running safely and enjoyably.
