Here's a hack I found awhile back this year and it works wonders. This hack works great with those thin floppy nails that we get Catfished on ( cough cough SheIn, temu etc). Don't toss those press ons try this. Let's not go into the new year with trash press ons.
what you need
corn starch
nail glue or any Krazy or super glue
a nail brush or something to scoop the corn starch with
a file
press on
step 1: prep nails like usual
step 2: apply corn starch on top of your nail
Step 3: apply some glue dots around the nail
step 4: apply the press on on top dust off the powder from around your nail
step 5: apply a thin layer of glue, quickly apply the corn starch on top ( a nice glob ) steal the corn starch with the nail glue.
* this helps give the back of the nail some structure especially if your always bending your nails.
⚠️ You don't have to use Krazy glue or gel if you don't want to, the glue is in the picture because that's what I PERSONALLY USE. Please use the glue or nonglue that you want
... Read moreOkay, so you've seen the cornstarch nail hack, right? It's a total game-changer for those flimsy press-ons! But let's be real, getting your DIY press-on nails to truly last '40 days & 40 nights' (or even just an extra week!) involves more than just the starch and glue. I’ve been there, experimenting with how to make my own press on nails feel salon-quality at home, and I’ve picked up some crucial tips that make all the difference. Many of you are searching for 'homemade nail glue' or 'how to make nail glue' – and while this hack isn't about making glue *from scratch*, it fundamentally transforms your regular nail glue into a super-powered adhesive, giving you that 'cornstarch glue homemade' strength you're looking for! Let me share my secrets for truly bulletproof press-ons.
First things first: nail prep. This is the most overlooked step when doing DIY press on nails at home, but it's absolutely vital for making sure your cornstarch nails really stick and last. Forget just a quick wipe! For that '40 days & 40 nights' wear, you need a meticulous step-by-step guide:
Clean Slate: Start by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water, then dry them completely.
Push and Trim Cuticles: Gently push back your cuticles. I use an orange wood stick. If you have any hangnails, carefully trim them. Don't cut your actual cuticles!
Buff the Surface: Lightly buff the surface of your natural nails. This creates a slightly rough texture for the glue to adhere to, similar to how you'd prep for acrylics. Don’t overdo it – just a few gentle passes.
Dehydrate & Cleanse: This is a crucial step! Use an alcohol wipe or nail dehydrator/primer. This removes all natural oils and moisture from your nail plate, which are the main culprits for pop-offs. My nails used to lift constantly until I started doing this.
Size Correctly: Before any glue, lay out your press-ons and find the perfect size for each nail. If it's slightly too big, you can gently file the sides down. A perfect fit prevents lifting and snags.
Now, let’s talk about maximizing that cornstarch magic. When applying the glue and cornstarch, a common mistake I made was not using enough glue to 'seal' the cornstarch glob. Ensure a generous, even layer of glue over the cornstarch on the underside of the press-on for maximum reinforcement. This is where you get that incredible added structure, making flimsy nails feel like solid acrylics.
Gentle Application: When placing the press-on, apply firm, even pressure for about 10-15 seconds. This helps distribute the modified 'homemade nail glue' and cornstarch mixture evenly and ensures a strong bond.
Avoid Water Initially: For the first few hours after application, try to avoid prolonged water exposure. This allows the glue to fully cure and bond properly.
Maintenance: If you notice any lifting around the edges after a few days, don't panic! A tiny dot of glue applied carefully under the lifted edge can often re-seal it and extend your wear. This really helps achieve that '40 days & 40 nights' durability.
📣 For all those who tried this hack I dropped a post on how to safely remove them please check that out. 💅🏾
