Most of what you know about dopamine is wrong 👀

It's not what makes you happy...

It's what makes you want. And the cheap version is killing your drive. The 1% protect their baseline and stay locked in.

... Read moreIn my experience, understanding dopamine as the chemical that fuels desire rather than just happiness has been a game changer. Many people think dopamine spikes when we achieve something, but it's actually highest during the pursuit. This helps explain why the journey or the challenge feels more gratifying than the reward itself. When I started focusing on enjoying the process instead of obsessing about outcomes, my motivation improved significantly. However, what surprised me most was how 'cheap dopamine' sources like endless scrolling, sugary snacks, or quick digital wins can damage our brain’s baseline dopamine levels. I noticed that when I indulged in these, tasks that used to excite me became dull. This aligns with research showing these habits wear down dopamine receptors, leaving us feeling unmotivated even for things we used to love. Interestingly, simply increasing stimulants like caffeine or sugar doesn’t solve this. The baseline dopamine system that maintains our drive gets depleted, so no amount of quick fixes are truly effective until the baseline is restored. Through trial and error, I found that natural methods such as exposing myself to morning sunlight for 10 minutes helped kickstart my dopamine system and enhance focus throughout the day. I also experimented with cold exposure—taking cold showers or brief dips—leading to a sustained dopamine boost that made me feel more alert and motivated for hours. This holistic approach of cutting out cheap dopamine triggers and embracing natural habits has helped me regain control over my motivation. It’s about respecting the delicate balance of our dopamine system and protecting our baseline rather than chasing short-term spikes. For anyone feeling stuck or drained, exploring these strategies and embracing the pursuit process can make a meaningful difference in staying locked in and driven.
