" Your too pretty to be Autistic "
This is not a compliment. insinuating that someone is conventionally attractive, so they can't be autistic It's deeply rooted in misogony and ableisim. please normalize, people of all kinds be on the spectrum. #autisticwomen #autisticwoman
I've often encountered the statement "You're too pretty to be autistic," and it's always been an uncomfortable reminder of how society misunderstands autism. This phrase isn’t a compliment; it implies that autism correlates with how someone looks, which is simply not true. People on the autism spectrum come from all walks of life and can have any appearance, including being conventionally attractive. In my personal experience and conversations with autistic individuals, it’s clear that these assumptions stem from deep-rooted ableism and misogyny—where women, in particular, face unrealistic stereotypes about how autism should manifest. Recognizing that autism doesn’t have a ‘look’ helps challenge these biases and supports greater inclusion. It’s also important to recognize the hashtags like #autisticwomen and #autisticwoman as valuable communities where people share their stories and help normalize diverse experiences. By listening to these voices and educating ourselves, we can move beyond stereotypes and embrace the full spectrum of human neurodiversity. Normalizing that "people of all kinds be on the spectrum" means embracing diversity in all forms—appearance included—and fostering empathy and understanding rather than judgment or disbelief. If more people understood that autism isn't about looks but about a neurological difference, those harmful comments would lose their power.
