What kind of birth control do you use and why?

I myself have tried several types of birth control and they all have their pros and cons. I've been on and off birth control since I was 13 due to debilitating periods. I've tried many different pills, the ring, and two IUDs- let me break it down from my experience.

Orthotricycline (pill)

-on it for about four years

-did nothing but make me gain weight

I don't have any pros for this one 🤷🏻‍♀️

Norgee (pill)

-on it for a year ish

-absolutely terrible did not help anything in the slightest

Lo Lo Estrogen Fe (pill)

-on it for sixish months

-kind of helped but not much

Pros: it reduced my periods to just spotting, I didn't gain weight, less moody

Cons: exhausted 24/7, constipated frequently

Balziva (pill)

-on it for two years

-stopped my periods at first but then I started spotting

Pros: no weight gain, reduced periods, clear skin

Cons: I got pregnant- TWICE, all while taking it exactly as I should. Both pregnancies resulted in horrid miscarriages.

NuvaRing

-on it for three months

-it just wasn't working for me

Pros: I was able to skip my periods

Cons: weight gain, PMS more extreme than ever, another pregnancy and miscarriage

Lyletta (Hormonal IUD)

-a year and a half

-I started having horrid periods again after about eight months

Pros: I didn't have to think about it, periods stopped for a bit

Cons: when my periods came back my cramps felt worse than any miscarriage or cramps before, horrid nausea with those cramps, my body was trying to push the IUD out, and of course the insertion is hell

Kyleena (Hormonal IUD)

-currently have (it's been about five or six months)

-still have "periods" but it's mainly just spotting

Pros: my new obgyn numbed me for insertion (still sucked but less), no weight gain, no PMS or PMDD

Cons: it hurts getting put in, my hair is thinner

It should be mentioned that I have PCOS and Endometriosis but wasn't diagnosed until I was 18 and had a laporoscopy. Before the diagnosis even on the pill, I was regularly bleeding through an ultra tampon and a super plus pad within 3 hours and I'd pass clots the size of my hand- several times per cycle. I was always super sick around my period and horribly anemic. I was even to the point of missing school because all I could do was lay in bed. I recommend either the ring or an IUD myself- my body just wasn't a fan of the liletta. I can't take estrogen based birth control. Estrogen is what fuels endometriosis (although mine has gotten to the point that it produces it's own estrogen). I also have to be careful because extra estrogen raises my blood pressure.

I think hormonal birth control CAN be great for some people. Unfortunately though it can mess with your body so much. Can’t wait to see more birth control options for men coming soon (hopefully🙃)
