Helper’s diary
As a domestic helper in Singapore, my meals not only provide nourishment but also connect me to my cultural roots and the diverse community I serve. Many helpers come from different countries, bringing unique dietary habits influenced by their religion and traditions. For example, some helpers follow halal diets due to Islamic faith, avoiding pork and alcohol. Others may adhere to vegetarianism or avoid certain meats for religious reasons, such as Hinduism or Buddhism. Living here, I’ve found adapting my meals to fit both my employer’s household and my own practices valuable. Simple, wholesome food like rice, vegetables, and lean proteins often form the core of our meals. I also appreciate dishes that remind me of home, which comfort me during long working hours. Cooking my meals or sharing food experiences with fellow helpers often provides a wonderful way to exchange cultural insights and support each other. Understanding these dietary preferences helps me respect and accommodate the households I work with, as Singapore is a melting pot of cultures and religious beliefs. This experience has broadened my appreciation for diverse foods and the significance behind them, enhancing my daily life and work as a helper.
