We made it to 6 months partially breastfeeding, unfortunately I was never able to exclusively breastfeed but this journey was so worth it and amazing. Although I do wish someone would’ve mentioned your hormones go out of whack once you start weaning baby. For a few weeks my hormones went out of whack and was feeling pretty depressed. Hang in there if you’re in the same boat, it does pass. My baby boy is doing beautifully and I did the best I can. I have a beautiful family and I am very blessed. But beyond the emotional aspect, many mamas wonder how to actually navigate the weaning process itself, especially if you're aiming for a gentle, gradual approach. I've learned a few tips that might help if you're looking to slowly transition your little one. First off, gradual weaning is often the kindest way for both you and your baby. It helps prevent engorgement for you and gives your baby time to adjust emotionally and physically. For me, that meant taking it one step at a time. One common strategy is to drop one feeding at a time. Pick the feeding your baby seems least interested in, or one that's easiest for you to replace with a bottle or solid food (if they're old enough). For instance, if the mid-afternoon feed is often shorter or easily skipped, try replacing it with a snack and a drink in a cup. Wait a few days, or even a week, before dropping another feeding. This slow pace allows your body to naturally reduce milk production, minimizing discomfort. Another helpful trick is to shorten nursing sessions. Instead of a full feeding, offer the breast for just a few minutes, then engage your baby with a fun activity or offer a cup of water. Distraction is your friend! When your baby asks to nurse, you can try offering a cuddle, a new toy, or a snack first. Sometimes, they just want comfort, not necessarily milk. I also found that incorporating tools like a silicone milk collector (like the one I used, visible in the image) can be surprisingly helpful during this phase. While primarily used to catch let-down from the other breast during nursing, it can also be used to gently express a small amount of milk if you feel uncomfortably full, without stimulating your supply too much. This helps manage engorgement without signaling your body to make more milk, which is crucial during weaning. For those considering pacifier weaning, it's another whole chapter! If your little one relies on a pacifier, gradually reducing its use can save you some meltdowns. Many recommend starting with daytime use first. Try to limit the pacifier to only naps and bedtime. Then, once they're comfortable with that, you can tackle naptime. Offer alternative comfort objects like a special blanket or stuffed animal. Positive reinforcement works wonders here – lots of praise and cuddles when they manage without it. Remember, consistency is key, but so is compassion. There will be tough days, and that's okay. Ultimately, whether it's breastfeeding or pacifier weaning, be kind to yourself and your baby. There's no single right way or timeline. Every baby is different, and every mama's journey is unique. Don't forget that self-care you heard about in my main post – it's absolutely vital. Take deep breaths, ask for help, and celebrate every small victory. You're doing an amazing job, and this phase, like all others, will pass.
