MY GO TO STRESS MANAGEMENT TIPS AS AN RN 💫
Night shift is hard, but taking care of yourself makes all the difference. Prioritizing rest, hydration, and small moments of self-care helps me show up as my best self—for my patients and myself. 🤍
My go-to ways to handle stress on night shift:
✔ Pre-shift routine – Hydrate, eat a protein-packed meal, and get a power nap in if possible.
✔ Micro-breaks – A few deep breaths, stretching, or even a quick run up & down the steps to stay awake.
✔ Music & TV shows – On my break, I listen to music or put on my favorite TV show.
✔ Caffeine management – Caffeine is a must for me, but I cut it off by 3-4 AM to avoid wrecking my sleep.
✔ Post-shift wind-down – Blue light blockers, a shower, and a black out curtains help me actually sleep after work.
What’s your #1 tip for surviving night shift? ⬇️
Night shifts can be challenging for nurses, impacting both mental and physical well-being. It's crucial to develop sustainable habits that keep energy levels up and stress at bay. First, a well-structured pre-shift routine that includes hydration and a nutrient-rich meal can set a positive tone for the night ahead. Implementing techniques such as deep-breathing exercises and short physical activities during micro-breaks can rejuvenate both mind and body. In addition to these physical strategies, mental stimulation is key; listening to favorite music or shows can provide a much-needed mental escape during breaks. Managing caffeine intake is also vital—limiting it in the early morning hours can help mitigate negative effects on sleep once the shift ends. Finally, establishing a relaxing post-shift wind-down routine with blue light blockers, a warm shower, and a comfortable sleep environment can significantly improve recovery and freshness upon waking. By prioritizing these practices, nurses can enhance their overall resilience and effectiveness in their demanding roles.
