"F-Holes" is the return of a mysterious character that Jason Montinola has created since 2006, a character who acts as a "sound bodyguard" and becomes central to storytelling in this exhibition, through a painting that looks like a piece of "fictional history" connecting between truth, imagination, and the unseen.
Montinola, is a Filipino contemporary artist who is unique in combining classical painting techniques, particularly influences from the Renaissance, with surreal and contemporary content; his works often explore human states, beliefs, and spiritual dimensions, through an atmosphere that is both spectacular, deep, and strangely latent to dark.
The exhibition is based on the idea that "sound" is another form of historical recording - whether natural sounds, war sounds, prayer sounds, or music from each era - these sounds do not disintegrate, but persist in the world as constantly overlapping waves, memories, and energies.
What the artist does is to make these "sounds" sketchy through the F-Holes character, so her face is never static, but changes according to the "sounds" she takes in each moment. In visual art, the key symbol that reappears is the f-hole-like shape of the violin painted on the face, likening to an opening that makes the sound flow through.
This exhibition may not just talk about sound or music, but the question of what we see may be the surface of something deeper.

นิทรรศการ “F-Holes” ของ Jason Montinola ช่วยเปิดมุมมองใหม่ๆ ต่อการรับรู้เสียง ผ่านการแสดงภาพใบหน้าตัวละครที่ไม่หยุดนิ่ง เปรียบเสมือนการเปลี่ยนพลังงานของเสียงให้กลายเป็นรูปร่างและความรู้สึกทางภาพศิลป์ ซึ่งเป็นประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวที่ทำให้ผมหยุดคิดถึงเสียงในแง่มุมที่ลึกซึ้งยิ่งขึ้น ที่น่าสนใจคือ การเลือกใช้สัญลักษณ์ f-hole ที่คล้ายกับช่องเสียงของไวโอลินบนใบหน้าตัวละคร สื่อถึงการเป็นตัวกลางรับและถ่ายทอดเสียงเหล่านั้น นอกจากจะสะท้อนถึงเสียงในอดีต ทั้งเสียงธรรมชาติ เสียงสงคราม หรือเสียงเพลงแล้ว มันยังสะท้อนถึงความทรงจำและความรู้สึกที่ถูกเก็บไว้ในบริบทต่างๆ ที่ผ่านเข้ามาในชีวิตมนุษย์ จากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัว การได้ชมผลงานแบบนี้ทำให้เรารู้สึกเชื่อมโยงกับเสียงในรูปแบบที่ไม่เคยสัมผัสมาก่อน คือเสียงไม่ได้เป็นแค่สิ่งที่เรารับรู้ผ่านหู แต่มันผสมผสานอยู่ในทุกมิติของชีวิต ตั้งแต่ความรู้สึกภายในจนถึงการรับรู้ผ่านภาพลักษณ์ภายนอก หลายครั้งเราอาจมองข้าม “เสียงที่ซ่อนอยู่” ในแต่ละช่วงเวลาไป สิ่งที่ทำให้ผมประทับใจอีกอย่างคือการที่นิทรรศการจัดให้เข้าชมฟรีและมีที่จอดรถสะดวก เหมาะสำหรับทั้งคนรักศิลปะและผู้ที่อยากลองสัมผัสประสบการณ์ศิลปะแนวคิดใหม่ๆ ในกรุงเทพฯ จนถึงสิ้นเดือนเมษายนนี้ ถือเป็นโอกาสดีที่จะได้มาเปิดประสบการณ์เสียงผ่านสายตา และทำความเข้าใจกับความหมายลึกซึ้งของเสียงที่อยู่รอบตัวเราทุกเมื่อ หากคุณชื่นชอบการผสมผสานระหว่างศิลปะร่วมสมัยและประวัติศาสตร์เชิงสัญลักษณ์ พร้อมอยากลองตีความเสียงในรูปแบบใหม่ “F-Holes” โดย Jason Montinola นับเป็นนิทรรศการที่คุณไม่ควรพลาด
